Matthew 9:1-11
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 9
1
Getting into a boat,
Jesus
crossed over
the Sea of Galilee
and came to His own city.
2
And they brought to Him a paralyzed man lying on a stretcher. And seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man who was paralyzed, 'Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.'
3
And some of the scribes said to themselves, 'This man is blaspheming!'
4
And Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, said, 'Why are you thinking evil in your hearts?
5
For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
6
But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins'—then He *said to the paralyzed man, 'Get up, pick up your stretcher and go home.'
7
And he got up and went home.
8
But when the crowds saw
this,
they were awestruck, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
9
As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called Matthew sitting in the tax collector’s office; and He *said to him, 'Follow Me!' And he got up and followed Him.
10
Then it happened that as Jesus was reclining
at the table
in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and
began
dining with Jesus and His disciples.
11
And when the Pharisees saw
this,
they said to His disciples, 'Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?'
King James Version
Chapter 9
1
And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city.
2
And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.
3
And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.
4
And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts
5
For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?
6
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.
7
And he arose, and departed to his house.
8
But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
9
And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
10
And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.
11
And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 9
1
So he got into a boat, crossed over, and came to his own town.
2
Just then some men brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher. Seeing their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, "Have courage, son, your sins are forgiven."
3
At this, some of the scribes said to themselves, "He’s blaspheming!"
4
Perceiving their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why are you thinking evil things in your hearts?
5
For which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
6
But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" —then he told the paralytic, "Get up, take your stretcher, and go home."
7
So he got up and went home.
8
When the crowds saw this, they were awestruck and gave glory to God, who had given such authority to men.
9
As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the toll booth, and he said to him, "Follow me," and he got up and followed him.
10
While he was reclining at the table in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came to eat with Jesus and his disciples.
11
When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
New Living Translation
Chapter 9
1
Jesus climbed into a boat and went back across the lake to his own town.
2
Some people brought to him a paralyzed man on a mat. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, 'Be encouraged, my child! Your sins are forgiven.'
3
But some of the teachers of religious law said to themselves, 'That’s blasphemy! Does he think he’s God?'
4
Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, 'Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts?
5
Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’?
6
So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.' Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, 'Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!'
7
And the man jumped up and went home!
8
Fear swept through the crowd as they saw this happen. And they praised God for giving humans such authority.
9
As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. 'Follow me and be my disciple,' Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him.
10
Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners.
11
But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, 'Why does your teacher eat with such scum? '

For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?

But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" — he then said to the paralytic — "Rise, pick up your bed and go home."

And he rose and went home.
