Matthew 5:36-40
New American Standard Bible
King James Version
Chapter 5
36Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
38Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 5
36Do not swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black. 37But let your 'yes' mean 'yes,' and your 'no' mean 'no.' Anything more than this is from the evil one.
38"You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
39But I tell you, don't resist an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
40As for the one who wants to sue you and take away your shirt, let him have your coat as well.
New Living Translation
Chapter 5
36Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black. 37Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.
38You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’
39But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also.
40If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too.
