Matthew 5:36-39
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 5
36
Nor shall you take an oath by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black.
37
But make sure your statement is, ‘ Yes, yes’
or
‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil
origin.
38
You have heard that it was said, ‘EYE FOR EYE, and TOOTH FOR TOOTH.’
39
But I say to you, do not show opposition against an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other toward him also.
King James Version
Chapter 5
36
Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
37
But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
38
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39
But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 5
36
Do not swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black.
37
But let your 'yes' mean 'yes,' and your 'no' mean 'no.' Anything more than this is from the evil one.
38
"You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
39
But I tell you, don't resist an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
New Living Translation
Chapter 5
36
Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black.
37
Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.
38
You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’
39
But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also.
English Standard Version
