Matthew 26:37-44
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 26
37
And He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with Him, and began to be grieved and distressed.
38
Then He *said to them, 'My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.'
39
And He went a little beyond
them,
and fell on His face and prayed, saying, 'My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You
will.
'
40
And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and He *said to Peter, 'So, you
men
could not keep watch with Me for one hour?
41
Keep watching and praying, so that you do not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.'
42
He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, 'My Father, if this
cup
cannot pass away unless I drink
from
it, Your will be done.'
43
Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
44
And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more.
King James Version
Chapter 26
37
And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
38
Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
39
And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
40
And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour
41
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
42
He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
43
And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.
44
And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 26
37
Taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
38
He said to them, "I am deeply grieved to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me."
39
Going a little farther, he fell facedown and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
40
Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He asked Peter, "So, couldn’t you stay awake with me one hour?
41
Stay awake and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
42
Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done."
43
And he came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open.
44
After leaving them, he went away again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more.
New Living Translation
Chapter 26
37
He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed.
38
He told them, 'My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.'
39
He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, 'My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.'
40
Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, 'Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?
41
Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!'
42
Then Jesus left them a second time and prayed, 'My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.'
43
When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open.
44
So he went to pray a third time, saying the same things again.
