Judges 9:54-57
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 9
54
Then he called quickly to the young man, his armor bearer, and said to him, 'Draw your sword and kill me, so that it will not be said of me, ‘A woman killed him.’?' So the young man pierced him through, and he died.
55
Now when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, each left for his home.
56
So God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he had done to his father in killing his seventy brothers.
57
God also returned all the wickedness of the men of Shechem on their heads, and the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
King James Version
Chapter 9
54
Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
55
And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.
56
Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
57
And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 9
54
He quickly called his armor-bearer and said to him, "Draw your sword and kill me, or they’ll say about me, ‘A woman killed him.’" So his armor-bearer ran him through, and he died.
55
When the Israelites saw that Abimelech was dead, they all went home.
56
In this way, God brought back Abimelech’s evil—the evil that Abimelech had done to his father when he killed his seventy brothers.
57
God also brought back to the men of Shechem all their evil. So the curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
New Living Translation
Chapter 9
54
He quickly said to his young armor bearer, 'Draw your sword and kill me! Don’t let it be said that a woman killed Abimelech!' So the young man ran him through with his sword, and he died.
55
When Abimelech’s men saw that he was dead, they disbanded and returned to their homes.
56
In this way, God punished Abimelech for the evil he had done against his father by murdering his seventy brothers.
57
God also punished the men of Shechem for all their evil. So the curse of Jotham son of Gideon was fulfilled.
English Standard Version
