Genesis 37:1-4
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 37
1
Now Jacob lived in the land where his father had lived as a stranger, in the land of Canaan.
2
These are
the records of
the generations of Jacob. Joseph,
when he was
seventeen years of age, was pasturing the flock with his brothers, while he was
still
a youth, along with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives. And Joseph brought back a bad report about them to their father.
3
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his
other
sons, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a multicolored tunic.
4
And his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; and
so
they hated him and could not speak to him on friendly terms.
King James Version
Chapter 37
1
And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.
2
These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
3
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.
4
And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 37
1
Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.
2
These are the family records of Jacob. At seventeen years of age, Joseph tended sheep with his brothers. The young man was working with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought a bad report about them to their father.
3
Now Israel loved Joseph more than his other sons because Joseph was a son born to him in his old age, and he made a robe of many colors for him.
4
When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not bring themselves to speak peaceably to him.
New Living Translation
Chapter 37
1
So Jacob settled again in the land of Canaan, where his father had lived as a foreigner.
2
This is the account of Jacob and his family. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he often tended his father’s flocks. He worked for his half brothers, the sons of his father’s wives Bilhah and Zilpah. But Joseph reported to his father some of the bad things his brothers were doing.
3
Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph — a beautiful robe.
4
But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him.
English Standard Version
