Genesis 16:8-12
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 16
8
He said, 'Hagar, Sarai’s slave woman, from where have you come, and where are you going?' And she said, 'I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.'
9
So the angel of the
Lord
said to her, 'Return to your mistress, and submit to her authority.'
10
The angel of the
Lord
also said to her, 'I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be too many to count.'
11
The angel of the
Lord
said to her further,
'Behold, you are pregnant,
And you will give birth to a son;
And you shall name him Ishmael,
Because the
Lord
has heard your affliction.
12
But he will be a wild donkey of a man;
His hand
will be
against everyone,
And everyone’s hand
will be
against him;
And he will live in defiance of all his brothers.'
King James Version
Chapter 16
8
And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
9
And the angel of the
Lord
said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
10
And the angel of the
Lord
said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11
And the angel of the
Lord
said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the
Lord
hath heard thy affliction.
12
And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 16
8
He said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She replied, "I’m running away from my mistress Sarai."
9
The angel of the
Lord
said to her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her authority."
10
The angel of the
Lord
said to her, "I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count."
11
The angel of the
Lord
said to her, "You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael, for the
Lord
has heard your cry of affliction.
12
This man will be like a wild donkey. His hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand will be against him; he will settle near all his relatives."
New Living Translation
Chapter 16
8
The angel said to her, 'Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where have you come from, and where are you going?' 'I’m running away from my mistress, Sarai,' she replied.
9
The angel of the
Lord
said to her, 'Return to your mistress, and submit to her authority.'
10
Then he added, 'I will give you more descendants than you can count.'
11
And the angel also said, 'You are now pregnant and will give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael (which means ‘God hears’), for the
Lord
has heard your cry of distress.
12
This son of yours will be a wild man, as untamed as a wild donkey! He will raise his fist against everyone, and everyone will be against him. Yes, he will live in open hostility against all his relatives.'
English Standard Version
