But before very long a violent wind, called Euraquilo, rushed down from the land;

and when the ship was caught
in it
and could not head up into the wind, we gave up and let ourselves be driven
by the wind.

And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let
her

Since the ship was caught and unable to head into the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along.

But the weather changed abruptly, and a wind of typhoon strength (called a 'northeaster') burst across the island and blew us out to sea.

The sailors couldn’t turn the ship into the wind, so they gave up and let it run before the gale.
