Acts 13:20-43

Chapter 13
20After these things He gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. 21Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My will.’ 23From the descendants of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, 24after John had proclaimed, before His coming, a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25And while John was completing his course, he kept saying, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold, one is coming after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’
26Brothers, sons of Abraham’s family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent.
27For those who live in Jerusalem, and their rulers, recognizing neither Him nor the declarations of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him.
28And though they found no grounds for putting Him to death, they asked Pilate that He be executed.
29When they had carried out everything that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the cross and laid Him in a tomb.
30But God raised Him from the dead;
31and for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His witnesses to the people.
32And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers,
33that God has fulfilled this promise to those of us who are the descendants by raising Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm: ‘YOU ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE FATHERED YOU.’
34As for the fact that He raised Him from the dead, never again to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘I WILL GIVE YOU THE HOLY and faithful mercies of DAVID.’
35Therefore, He also says in another Psalm: ‘YOU WILL NOT ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.’
36For David, after he had served God’s purpose in his own generation, fell asleep, and was buried among his fathers and underwent decay;
37but He whom God raised did not undergo decay.
38Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,
39and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.
40Therefore, see that the thing spoken of in the Prophets does not come upon you:
42As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people repeatedly begged to have these things spoken to them the next Sabbath.
43Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who were speaking to them and urging them to continue in the grace of God.

20And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. 21And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years. 22And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. 23Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: 24When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. 26Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. 27For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. 28And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. 29And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. 30But God raised him from the dead: 31And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people. 32And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, 33God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. 34And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. 35Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 36For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: 37But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. 38Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 39And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets; 41Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.
42And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
43Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

After this, he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. 21Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22After removing him, he raised up David as their king and testified about him, 'I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after my own heart, who will carry out all my will.'
23"From this man's descendants, as he promised, God brought to Israel the Savior, Jesus.
24Before his coming to public attention, John had previously proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
25Now as John was completing his mission, he said, 'Who do you think I am? I am not the one. But one is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet.'
26"Brothers and sisters, children of Abraham's race, and those among you who fear God, it is to us that the word of this salvation has been sent.
27Since the residents of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him or the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they have fulfilled their words by condemning him.
28Though they found no grounds for the death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him killed.
29When they had carried out all that had been written about him, they took him down from the tree and put him in a tomb.
30But God raised him from the dead,
31and he appeared for many days to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.
32And we ourselves proclaim to you the good news of the promise that was made to our ancestors.
34As to his raising him from the dead, never to return to decay, he has spoken in this way, I will give you the holy and sure promises of David.
35Therefore he also says in another passage, You will not let your Holy One see decay.
36For David, after serving God's purpose in his own generation, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and decayed,
37but the one God raised up did not decay.
38Therefore, let it be known to you, brothers and sisters, that through this man forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed to you.
39Everyone who believes is justified through him from everything that you could not be justified from through the law of Moses.
40So beware that what is said in the prophets does not happen to you:

Chapter 13
20All this took about 450 years. 'After that, God gave them judges to rule until the time of Samuel the prophet. 21Then the people begged for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for forty years. 22But God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’
23And it is one of King David’s descendants, Jesus, who is God’s promised Savior of Israel!
24Before he came, John the Baptist preached that all the people of Israel needed to repent of their sins and turn to God and be baptized.
25As John was finishing his ministry he asked, ‘Do you think I am the Messiah? No, I am not! But he is coming soon — and I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the sandals on his feet.’
26Brothers — you sons of Abraham, and also you God-fearing Gentiles — this message of salvation has been sent to us!
27The people in Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognize Jesus as the one the prophets had spoken about. Instead, they condemned him, and in doing this they fulfilled the prophets’ words that are read every Sabbath.
28They found no legal reason to execute him, but they asked Pilate to have him killed anyway.
29When they had done all that the prophecies said about him, they took him down from the cross and placed him in a tomb.
30But God raised him from the dead!
31And over a period of many days he appeared to those who had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to the people of Israel.
34For God had promised to raise him from the dead, not leaving him to rot in the grave. He said, ‘I will give you the sacred blessings I promised to David.’
35Another psalm explains it more fully: ‘You will not allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.’
36This is not a reference to David, for after David had done the will of God in his own generation, he died and was buried with his ancestors, and his body decayed.
37No, it was a reference to someone else — someone whom God raised and whose body did not decay.
