1 Kings 3:17-22
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 3
17
The one woman said, 'Pardon me, my lord: this woman and I live in the same house; and I gave birth to a child while she was in the house.
18
And it happened on the third day after I gave birth, that this woman also gave birth to a child, and we were together. There was no stranger with us in the house, only the two of us in the house.
19
Then this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him.
20
So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from beside me while your servant was asleep, and she laid him at her breast, and laid her dead son at my breast.
21
When I got up in the morning to nurse my son, behold, he was dead! But when I examined him closely in the morning, behold, he was not my son, whom I had borne!'
22
Then the other woman said, 'No! For the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son.' But the first woman said, 'No! For the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son.' So they spoke before the king.
King James Version
Chapter 3
17
And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
18
And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.
19
And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
20
And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.
21
And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.
22
And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.

Chapter 3
17
One woman said, "Please, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I had a baby while she was in the house.
18
On the third day after I gave birth, she also had a baby and we were alone. No one else was with us in the house; just the two of us were there.
19
During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him.
20
She got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while your servant was asleep. She laid him in her arms, and she put her dead son in my arms.
21
When I got up in the morning to nurse my son, I discovered he was dead. That morning, when I looked closely at him I realized that he was not the son I gave birth to."
22
"No," the other woman said. "My son is the living one; your son is the dead one." The first woman said, "No, your son is the dead one; my son is the living one." So they argued before the king.
New Living Translation
Chapter 3
17
Please, my lord,' one of them began, 'this woman and I live in the same house. I gave birth to a baby while she was with me in the house.
18
Three days later this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there were only two of us in the house.
19
But her baby died during the night when she rolled over on it.
20
Then she got up in the night and took my son from beside me while I was asleep. She laid her dead child in my arms and took mine to sleep beside her.
21
And in the morning when I tried to nurse my son, he was dead! But when I looked more closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t my son at all.'
22
Then the other woman interrupted, 'It certainly was your son, and the living child is mine.' 'No,' the first woman said, 'the living child is mine, and the dead one is yours.' And so they argued back and forth before the king.
