What does 1 Kings 3:24 mean?

When God asked what Solomon wanted most, Solomon said, "an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil" (1 Kings 3:9). "Understanding," in this verse, means to hear. "Discern" means to pay attention. "Good" means desirable, while "evil" refers to something that isn't worth very much. Solomon asked for the ability to pay attention and hear what he needs to know so his people will receive the best.

In this case, he needs to force the people involved to say more words: to say what he needs to hear.

Two women are before him. They both gave birth to boys within days of each other. One of them accidentally smothered her child while she slept. Both women claim to be the mother of the living boy. Neither are changing their stories or revealing anything that would help Solomon know who is telling the truth and who's lying (1 Kings 3:16–23). He needs them to say more.

He tells one of his men to bring a sword. Next, Solomon will command the man to chop the child in half so each woman can have an equal part (1 Kings 3:25). That shocking command jolts the women out of their stories and into the truth. The real mother offers the child to the liar; the liar agrees with Solomon's command (1 Kings 3:26).

Wisdom, understanding, and discernment don't just mean that we know what the truth is or what to do. It often means the Holy Spirit guides us to take the next step on the path to discovering the truth.
