1 Kings 2:19-23
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 2
19
So Bathsheba went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king stood to meet her, bowed to her, and sat on his throne; then he had a throne set up for the king’s mother, and she sat on his right.
20
Then she said, 'I am making one small request of you; do not refuse me.' And the king said to her, 'Ask, my mother, for I will not refuse you.'
21
So she said, 'Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as a wife.'
22
But King Solomon answered and said to his mother, 'And why are you requesting Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Request for him the kingdom as well—since he is my older brother—for him, for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah!'
23
Then King Solomon swore by the
Lord
, saying, 'May God do so to me and more so, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life!
King James Version
Chapter 2
19
Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king's mother; and she sat on his right hand.
20
Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay.
21
And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.
22
And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.
23
Then king Solomon sware by the
Lord
, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.

Chapter 2
19
So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him about Adonijah. The king stood up to greet her, bowed to her, sat down on his throne, and had a throne placed for the king’s mother. So she sat down at his right hand.
20
Then she said, "I have just one small request of you. Don’t turn me down." "Go ahead and ask, mother," the king replied, "for I won’t turn you down."
21
So she said, "Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to your brother Adonijah as a wife."
22
King Solomon answered his mother, "Why are you requesting Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Since he is my elder brother, you might as well ask the kingship for him, for the priest Abiathar, and for Joab son of Zeruiah."
23
Then King Solomon took an oath by the
Lord
: "May God punish me and do so severely if Adonijah has not made this request at the cost of his life.
New Living Translation
Chapter 2
19
So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak on Adonijah’s behalf. The king rose from his throne to meet her, and he bowed down before her. When he sat down on his throne again, the king ordered that a throne be brought for his mother, and she sat at his right hand.
20
I have one small request to make of you,' she said. 'I hope you won’t turn me down.' 'What is it, my mother?' he asked. 'You know I won’t refuse you.'
21
Then let your brother Adonijah marry Abishag, the girl from Shunem,' she replied.
22
How can you possibly ask me to give Abishag to Adonijah?' King Solomon demanded. 'You might as well ask me to give him the kingdom! You know that he is my older brother, and that he has Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah on his side.'
23
Then King Solomon made a vow before the
Lord
: 'May God strike me and even kill me if Adonijah has not sealed his fate with this request.
