Ruth 4:4-6
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 4
4
So I thought that I would inform you, saying, ‘Buy
it
before those who are sitting
here,
and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem
it,
redeem
it;
but if not, tell me so that I may know; for there is no one except you to redeem
it,
and I am after you.’?' And he said, 'I will redeem
it.
'
5
Then Boaz said, 'On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.'
6
Then the redeemer said, 'I cannot redeem
it
for myself, otherwise I would jeopardize my own inheritance. Redeem
it
for yourself; you
may have
my right of redemption, since I cannot redeem
it.
'
King James Version
Chapter 4
4
And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.
5
Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.
6
And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 4
4
I thought I should inform you: Buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to redeem it, do it. But if you do not want to redeem it, tell me so that I will know, because there isn’t anyone other than you to redeem it, and I am next after you." "I want to redeem it," he answered.
5
Then Boaz said, "On the day you buy the field from Naomi, you will acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the deceased man, to perpetuate the man’s name on his property."
6
The redeemer replied, "I can’t redeem it myself, or I will ruin my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption, because I can’t redeem it."
New Living Translation
Chapter 4
4
I thought I should speak to you about it so that you can redeem it if you wish. If you want the land, then buy it here in the presence of these witnesses. But if you don’t want it, let me know right away, because I am next in line to redeem it after you.' The man replied, 'All right, I’ll redeem it.'
5
Then Boaz told him, 'Of course, your purchase of the land from Naomi also requires that you marry Ruth, the Moabite widow. That way she can have children who will carry on her husband’s name and keep the land in the family.'
6
Then I can’t redeem it,' the family redeemer replied, 'because this might endanger my own estate. You redeem the land; I cannot do it.'
English Standard Version
Chapter 4
4
So I thought I would tell you of it and say, ‘Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you will not, tell me, that I may know, for there is no one besides you to redeem it, and I come after you." And he said, "I will redeem it."
5
Then Boaz said, "The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance."
6
Then the redeemer said, "I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it."
New International Version
Chapter 4
4
I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you will not, tell me, so I will know. For no one has the right to do it except you, and I am next in line." "I will redeem it," he said.
5
Then Boaz said, "On the day you buy the land from Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the dead man’s widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property."
6
At this, the guardian-redeemer said, "Then I cannot redeem it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it."
New King James Version
Chapter 4

but if you will not redeem
it, then
tell me, that I may know; for
there is
no one but you to redeem

Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also buy
it
from Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance.”
6
And the close relative said, “I cannot redeem
it
for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. You redeem my right of redemption for yourself, for I cannot redeem
it.
