Numbers 22:23-29
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 22
23
When the donkey saw the angel of the
Lord
standing in the road with his sword drawn in his hand, the donkey turned off from the road and went into the field; and Balaam struck the donkey to guide her back onto the road.
24
Then the angel of the
Lord
stood in a narrow path of the vineyards,
with
a stone wall on this side and on that side.
25
When the donkey saw the angel of the
Lord
, she pressed herself against the wall and pressed Balaam’s foot against the wall, so he struck her again.
26
Then the angel of the
Lord
went further, and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn to the right or to the left.
27
When the donkey saw the angel of the
Lord
, she lay down under Balaam; so Balaam was angry and struck the donkey with his staff.
28
Then the
Lord
opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, 'What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?'
29
And Balaam said to the donkey, '
It is
because you have made a mockery of me! If only there had been a sword in my hand! For I would have killed you by now!'
King James Version
Chapter 22
23
And the ass saw the angel of the
Lord
standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.
24
But the angel of the
Lord
stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.
25
And when the ass saw the angel of the
Lord
, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.
26
And the angel of the
Lord
went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.
27
And when the ass saw the angel of the
Lord
, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.
28
And the
Lord
opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
29
And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.

Chapter 22
23
When the donkey saw the angel of the
Lord
standing on the path with a drawn sword in his hand, she turned off the path and went into the field. So Balaam hit her to return her to the path.
24
Then the angel of the
Lord
stood in a narrow passage between the vineyards, with a stone wall on either side.
25
The donkey saw the angel of the
Lord
and pressed herself against the wall, squeezing Balaam’s foot against it. So he hit her once again.
26
The angel of the
Lord
went ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn to the right or the left.
27
When the donkey saw the angel of the
Lord
, she crouched down under Balaam. So he became furious and beat the donkey with his stick.
28
Then the
Lord
opened the donkey’s mouth, and she asked Balaam, "What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?"
29
Balaam answered the donkey, "You made me look like a fool. If I had a sword in my hand, I’d kill you now!"
New Living Translation
Chapter 22
23
Balaam’s donkey saw the angel of the
Lord
standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. The donkey bolted off the road into a field, but Balaam beat it and turned it back onto the road.
24
Then the angel of the
Lord
stood at a place where the road narrowed between two vineyard walls.
25
When the donkey saw the angel of the
Lord
, it tried to squeeze by and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall. So Balaam beat the donkey again.
26
Then the angel of the
Lord
moved farther down the road and stood in a place too narrow for the donkey to get by at all.
27
This time when the donkey saw the angel, it lay down under Balaam. In a fit of rage Balaam beat the animal again with his staff.
28
Then the
Lord
gave the donkey the ability to speak. 'What have I done to you that deserves your beating me three times?' it asked Balaam.
29
You have made me look like a fool!' Balaam shouted. 'If I had a sword with me, I would kill you!'
