Matthew 23:2-5
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 23
2
saying: 'The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses.
3
Therefore, whatever they tell you, do and comply with it all, but do not do as they do; for they say
things
and do not do
them.
4
And they tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with
so much as
their finger.
5
And they do all their deeds to be noticed by
other
people; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels
of their garments.
King James Version
Chapter 23
2
saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
3
All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4
For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 23
2
"The scribes and the Pharisees are seated in the chair of Moses.
3
Therefore do whatever they tell you, and observe it. But don’t do what they do, because they don’t practice what they teach.
4
They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry and put them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger to move them.
5
They do everything to be seen by others: They enlarge their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.
New Living Translation
Chapter 23
2
The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses.
3
So practice and obey whatever they tell you, but don’t follow their example. For they don’t practice what they teach.
4
They crush people with unbearable religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden.
5
Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels.
English Standard Version
Chapter 23
2
"The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses ' seat,
3
so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.
4
They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people 's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.
5
They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,
New International Version
Chapter 23
2
"The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.
3
So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.
4
They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
5
"Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long;
New King James Version
Chapter 23
2
saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.
3
Therefore whatever they tell you to observe,
that
observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.
4
For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay
them
on men’s shoulders; but they
themselves
will not move them with one of their fingers.
5
But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments.
