Chapter 20
3And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace; 4and to those he said, ‘You go into the vineyard also, and whatever is right, I will give you.’ And so they went. 5Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did the same thing. 6And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing around; and he *said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day long?’ 7They *said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He *said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’
8Now when evening came, the owner of the vineyard *said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, starting with the last group to the first.’
9When those hired about the eleventh hour came, each one received a denarius.
10And so when those hired first came, they thought that they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius.
11When they received it, they grumbled at the landowner,
12saying, ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day’s work and the scorching heat.’
13But he answered and said to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius?
14Take what is yours and go; but I want to give to this last person the same as to you.
15Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with what is my own? Or is your eye envious because I am generous?’

He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. 8So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. 9And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. 10But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. 11And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, 12Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? 14Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. 15Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? 3When he went out about nine in the morning, he saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4He said to them, 'You also go into my vineyard, and I'll give you whatever is right.' So off they went. 5About noon and about three, he went out again and did the same thing. 6Then about five he went and found others standing around and said to them, 'Why have you been standing here all day doing nothing? '
7" 'Because no one hired us,' they said to him." 'You also go into my vineyard,' he told them.
8When evening came, the owner of the vineyard told his foreman, 'Call the workers and give them their pay, starting with the last and ending with the first.'
9"When those who were hired about five came, they each received one denarius.
10So when the first ones came, they assumed they would get more, but they also received a denarius each.
11When they received it, they began to complain to the landowner:
12These last men put in one hour, and you made them equal to us who bore the burden of the day's work and the burning heat.'

Chapter 20
3At nine o’clock in the morning he was passing through the marketplace and saw some people standing around doing nothing. 4So he hired them, telling them he would pay them whatever was right at the end of the day. 5So they went to work in the vineyard. At noon and again at three o’clock he did the same thing.
8That evening he told the foreman to call the workers in and pay them, beginning with the last workers first.
9When those hired at five o’clock were paid, each received a full day’s wage.
10When those hired first came to get their pay, they assumed they would receive more. But they, too, were paid a day’s wage.
11When they received their pay, they protested to the owner,
12‘Those people worked only one hour, and yet you’ve paid them just as much as you paid us who worked all day in the scorching heat.’
13He answered one of them, ‘Friend, I haven’t been unfair! Didn’t you agree to work all day for the usual wage?
14Take your money and go. I wanted to pay this last worker the same as you.
15Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?’

Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. 15Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’New International Version

3About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4He told them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.'
5So they went. 'He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.
6About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, 'Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?'
9The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.
10So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.
11When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.
12These who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.'
13But he answered one of them, 'I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius?
14Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.
15Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?'
