Matthew 20:4-10
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 20
4
and to those he said, ‘You go into the vineyard also, and whatever is right, I will give you.’ And
so
they went.
5
Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did the same thing.
6
And about the eleventh
hour
he went out and found others standing
around;
and he *said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day long?’
7
They *said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He *said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’
8
Now when evening came, the owner of the vineyard *said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, starting with the last
group
to the first.’
9
When those
hired
about the eleventh hour came, each one received a denarius.
10
And
so
when those
hired
first came, they thought that they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius.
King James Version
Chapter 20
4
And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.
5
Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
6
And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
7
They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
8
So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
9
And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
10
But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.

About noon and about three, he went out again and did the same thing.
6
Then about five he went and found others standing around and said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day doing nothing?’
7
"‘Because no one hired us,’ they said to him. "‘You also go into my vineyard,’ he told them.
8
When evening came, the owner of the vineyard told his foreman, ‘Call the workers and give them their pay, starting with the last and ending with the first.’
9
"When those who were hired about five came, they each received one denarius.
10
So when the first ones came, they assumed they would get more, but they also received a denarius each.
New Living Translation
Chapter 20
4
So he hired them, telling them he would pay them whatever was right at the end of the day.
5
So they went to work in the vineyard. At noon and again at three o’clock he did the same thing.
6
At five o’clock that afternoon he was in town again and saw some more people standing around. He asked them, ‘Why haven’t you been working today?’
7
They replied, ‘Because no one hired us.’ 'The landowner told them, ‘Then go out and join the others in my vineyard.’
8
That evening he told the foreman to call the workers in and pay them, beginning with the last workers first.
9
When those hired at five o’clock were paid, each received a full day’s wage.
10
When those hired first came to get their pay, they assumed they would receive more. But they, too, were paid a day’s wage.
