Matthew 14:2-10
New American Standard Bible
3For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip.
4For John had been saying to him, 'It is not lawful for you to have her.'
5Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded John as a prophet.
6But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,
7so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
8And after being prompted by her mother, she *said, 'Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.'
9And although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths and his dinner guests.
10He sent word and had John beheaded in the prison.

Chapter 14
2And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. 3For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. 4For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. 5And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. 6But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. 7Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. 8And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. 9And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. 10And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.Christian Standard Bible

8At her mother’s urging, the girl said, 'I want the head of John the Baptist on a tray!'
9Then the king regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests, he issued the necessary orders.
