Matthew 12:10-19
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 12
10
And a man
was there
whose hand was withered. And they questioned Jesus, asking, 'Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?'—so that they might bring charges against Him.
11
But He said to them, 'What man is there among you who has a sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out?
12
How much more valuable then is a person than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.'
13
Then He *said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand!' He stretched it out, and it was restored to normal, like the other.
14
But the Pharisees went out and conspired against Him,
as to
how they might destroy Him.
15
But Jesus, aware of
this,
withdrew from there. Many followed Him, and He healed them all,
16
and warned them not to tell who He was.
17
This happened
so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled:
18
'BEHOLD, MY SERVANT WHOM I HAVE CHOSEN;
MY BELOVED IN WHOM MY SOUL DELIGHTS;
I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT UPON HIM,
AND HE WILL PROCLAIM JUSTICE TO THE GENTILES.
19
HE WILL NOT QUARREL, NOR CRY OUT;
NOR WILL ANYONE HEAR HIS VOICE IN THE STREETS.
King James Version
Chapter 12
10
And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.
11
And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out
12
How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
13
Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.
14
Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.
15
But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;
16
And charged them that they should not make him known:
17
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
18
Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.
19
He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 12
10
There he saw a man who had a shriveled hand, and in order to accuse him they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"
11
He replied to them, "Who among you, if he had a sheep that fell into a pit on the Sabbath, wouldn’t take hold of it and lift it out?
12
A person is worth far more than a sheep; so it is lawful to do what is good on the Sabbath."
13
Then he told the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out, and it was restored, as good as the other.
14
But the Pharisees went out and plotted against him, how they might kill him.
15
Jesus was aware of this and withdrew. Large crowds followed him, and he healed them all.
16
He warned them not to make him known,
17
so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
18
Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19
He will not argue or shout,
and no one will hear his voice in the streets.
New Living Translation
Chapter 12
10
where he noticed a man with a deformed hand. The Pharisees asked Jesus, 'Does the law permit a person to work by healing on the Sabbath?' (They were hoping he would say yes, so they could bring charges against him.)
11
And he answered, 'If you had a sheep that fell into a well on the Sabbath, wouldn’t you work to pull it out? Of course you would.
12
And how much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Yes, the law permits a person to do good on the Sabbath.'
13
Then he said to the man, 'Hold out your hand.' So the man held out his hand, and it was restored, just like the other one!
14
Then the Pharisees called a meeting to plot how to kill Jesus.
15
But Jesus knew what they were planning. So he left that area, and many people followed him. He healed all the sick among them,
16
but he warned them not to reveal who he was.
17
This fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah concerning him:
18
'Look at my Servant, whom I have chosen.
He is my Beloved, who pleases me.
I will put my Spirit upon him,
and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19
He will not fight or shout
or raise his voice in public.
