Mark 7:17-25
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 7
17
And when He
later
entered a house, away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him about the parable.
18
And He *said to them, 'Are you so lacking in understanding as well? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the person from outside cannot defile him,
19
because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?' (
Thereby
He declared all foods clean.)
20
And He was saying, 'That which comes out of the person, that
is what
defiles the person.
21
For from within, out of the hearts of people, come the evil thoughts,
acts of
sexual immorality, thefts, murders,
acts of
adultery,
22
deeds of greed, wickedness, deceit, indecent behavior, envy, slander, pride,
and
foolishness.
23
All these evil things come from within and defile the person.'
24
Now Jesus got up and went from there to the region of Tyre . And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know
about it;
and
yet
He could not escape notice.
25
But after hearing about Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet.
King James Version
Chapter 7
17
And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
18
And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
19
Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?
20
And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22
Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23
All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
24
And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.
25
For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 7
17
When he went into the house away from the crowd, his disciples asked him about the parable.
18
He said to them, "Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don’t you realize that nothing going into a person from the outside can defile him?
19
For it doesn’t go into his heart but into the stomach and is eliminated" (thus he declared all foods clean ).
20
And he said, "What comes out of a person is what defiles him.
21
For from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders,
22
adulteries, greed, evil actions, deceit, self-indulgence, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.
23
All these evil things come from within and defile a person."
24
He got up and departed from there to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it, but he could not escape notice.
25
Instead, immediately after hearing about him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit came and fell at his feet.
New Living Translation
Chapter 7
17
Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just used.
18
Don’t you understand either?' he asked. 'Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you?
19
Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.' (By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God’s eyes.)
20
And then he added, 'It is what comes from inside that defiles you.
21
For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,
22
adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.
23
All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.'
24
Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre. He didn’t want anyone to know which house he was staying in, but he couldn’t keep it a secret.
25
Right away a woman who had heard about him came and fell at his feet. Her little girl was possessed by an evil spirit,

Chapter 7
17
And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable.
18
And he said to them, "Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,
19
since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?" (Thus he declared all foods clean.)
20
And he said, "What comes out of a person is what defiles him.
21
For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,
22
coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.
23
All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person."
24
And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden.
25
But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet.
New International Version
Chapter 7
17
After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable.
18
"Are you so dull?" he asked. "Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them?
19
For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)
20
He went on: "What comes out of a person is what defiles them.
21
For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder,
22
adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.
23
All these evils come from inside and defile a person."
24
Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret.
25
In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet.
New King James Version
Chapter 7
17
When He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.
18
So He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him,
19
because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated,
thus
purifying all foods?”
20
And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.
21
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22
thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
23
All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”
24
From there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He entered a house and wanted no one to know
it,
but He could not be hidden.
25
For a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, and she came and fell at His feet.
