Mark 5:2-10
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 5
2
When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him.
3
He lived among the tombs; and no one was able to bind him anymore, not even with a chain,
4
because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces; and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
5
Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and cutting himself with stones.
6
Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him;
7
and shouting with a loud voice, he *said, 'What business do You have with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!'
8
For He had
already
been saying to him, 'Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!'
9
And He was asking him, 'What is your name?' And he *said to Him, 'My name is Legion, for we are many.'
10
And he begged Him earnestly not to send them out of the region.
King James Version
Chapter 5
2
And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
3
Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
4
Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
5
And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
6
But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
7
And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
8
For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
9
And he asked him, What is thy name And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
10
And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 5
2
As soon as he got out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs and met him.
3
He lived in the tombs, and no one was able to restrain him anymore—not even with a chain —
4
because he often had been bound with shackles and chains, but had torn the chains apart and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5
Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains, he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before him.
7
And he cried out with a loud voice, "What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you before God, don’t torment me!"
8
For he had told him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"
9
"What is your name?" he asked him. "My name is Legion," he answered him, "because we are many."
10
And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the region.
New Living Translation
Chapter 5
2
When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him.
3
This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain.
4
Whenever he was put into chains and shackles — as he often was — he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5
Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.
6
When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him.
7
With a shriek, he screamed, 'Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!'
8
For Jesus had already said to the spirit, 'Come out of the man, you evil spirit.'
9
Then Jesus demanded, 'What is your name?' And he replied, 'My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.'
10
Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place.
