Judges 3:1-7
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 3
1
Now these are the nations that the
Lord
left, to test Israel by them (
that is,
all
the Israelites
who had not experienced any of the wars of Canaan;
2
only in order that the generations of the sons of Israel might be taught war, those who had not experienced it previously).
3
These nations are:
the five governors of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath.
4
They were
left
to test Israel by them, to find out if they would obey the commandments of the
Lord
, which He had commanded their fathers through Moses.
5
The sons of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites;
6
and they took their daughters for themselves as wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
7
So the sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the
Lord
, and they forgot the
Lord
their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth.
King James Version
Chapter 3
1
Now these are the nations which the
Lord
left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
2
Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
3
Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.
4
And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the
Lord
, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
5
And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:
6
And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
7
And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the
Lord
, and forgat the
Lord
their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 3
1
These are the nations the
Lord
left in order to test all those in Israel who had experienced none of the wars in Canaan.
2
This was to teach the future generations of the Israelites how to fight in battle, especially those who had not fought before.
3
These nations included the five rulers of the Philistines and all of the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in the Lebanese mountains from Mount Baal-hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath.
4
The
Lord
left them to test Israel, to determine if they would keep the
Lord
’s commands he had given their fathers through Moses.
5
But they settled among the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
6
The Israelites took their daughters as wives for themselves, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshiped their gods.
7
The Israelites did what was evil in the
Lord
’s sight; they forgot the
Lord
their God and worshiped the Baals and the Asherahs.
New Living Translation
Chapter 3
1
These are the nations that the
Lord
left in the land to test those Israelites who had not experienced the wars of Canaan.
2
He did this to teach warfare to generations of Israelites who had no experience in battle.
3
These are the nations: the Philistines (those living under the five Philistine rulers), all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living in the mountains of Lebanon from Mount Baal-hermon to Lebo-hamath.
4
These people were left to test the Israelites — to see whether they would obey the commands the
Lord
had given to their ancestors through Moses.
5
So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites,
6
and they intermarried with them. Israelite sons married their daughters, and Israelite daughters were given in marriage to their sons. And the Israelites served their gods.
7
The Israelites did evil in the
Lord
’s sight. They forgot about the
Lord
their God, and they served the images of Baal and the Asherah poles.
