Judges 20:41-48
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 20
41
Then the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were terrified; for they saw that disaster was close to them.
42
Therefore, they turned their backs before the men of Israel
to flee
in the direction of the wilderness, but the battle overtook them while those who
attacked
from the cities were annihilating them in the midst of them.
43
They surrounded Benjamin, pursued them without rest,
and
trampled them down opposite Gibeah toward the east.
44
So eighteen thousand men of Benjamin fell; all of these
were
valiant men.
45
The rest turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, but they caught five thousand of them on the roads and overtook them at Gidom, and killed two thousand of them.
46
So all those of Benjamin who fell that day were twenty-five thousand men who drew the sword; all of these were valiant men.
47
But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon; and they remained at the rock of Rimmon for four months.
48
The men of Israel then turned back against the sons of Benjamin and struck them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city with the cattle and all that they found; they also set on fire all the cities which they found.
King James Version
Chapter 20
41
And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.
42
Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
43
Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.
44
And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.
45
And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.
46
So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.
47
But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.
48
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 20
41
Then the men of Israel returned, and the men of Benjamin were terrified when they realized that disaster had struck them.
42
They retreated before the men of Israel toward the wilderness, but the battle overtook them, and those who came out of the cities slaughtered those between them.
43
They surrounded the Benjaminites, pursued them, and easily overtook them near Gibeah toward the east.
44
There were eighteen thousand men who died from Benjamin; all were warriors.
45
Then Benjamin turned and fled toward the wilderness to Rimmon Rock, and Israel killed five thousand men on the highways. They overtook them at Gidom and struck two thousand more dead.
46
All the Benjaminites who died that day were twenty-five thousand armed men; all were warriors.
47
But six hundred men escaped into the wilderness to Rimmon Rock and stayed there four months.
48
The men of Israel turned back against the other Benjaminites and killed them with their swords—the entire city, the animals, and everything that remained. They also burned all the cities that remained.
New Living Translation
Chapter 20
41
the men of Israel turned and attacked. At this point the men of Benjamin became terrified, because they realized disaster was close at hand.
42
So they turned around and fled before the Israelites toward the wilderness. But they couldn’t escape the battle, and the people who came out of the nearby towns were also killed.
43
The Israelites surrounded the men of Benjamin and chased them relentlessly, finally overtaking them east of Gibeah.
44
That day 18,000 of Benjamin’s strongest warriors died in battle.
45
The survivors fled into the wilderness toward the rock of Rimmon, but Israel killed 5,000 of them along the road. They continued the chase until they had killed another 2,000 near Gidom.
46
So that day the tribe of Benjamin lost 25,000 strong warriors armed with swords,
47
leaving only 600 men who escaped to the rock of Rimmon, where they lived for four months.
48
And the Israelites returned and slaughtered every living thing in all the towns — the people, the livestock, and everything they found. They also burned down all the towns they came to.
English Standard Version

Eighteen thousand Benjamites fell, all of them valiant fighters.

47
But six hundred of them turned and fled into the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, where they stayed four months.
48
The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put all the towns to the sword, including the animals and everything else they found. All the towns they came across they set on fire.
