Job 33:3-24

Chapter 33
3My words are from the integrity of my heart, And my lips speak knowledge sincerely. 4The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life. 5Refute me if you can; Line up against me, take your stand. 6Behold, I belong to God, like you; I too have been formed out of the clay. 7Behold, no fear of me should terrify you, Nor should my pressure weigh heavily on you. 8'You have in fact spoken while I listened, And I heard the sound of your words: 9‘I am pure, without wrongdoing; I am innocent and there is no guilt in me. 10Behold, He invents criticisms against me; He counts me as His enemy. 11He puts my feet in the stocks; He watches all my paths.’ 12Behold, let me respond to you, you are not right in this, For God is greater than mankind. 13'Why do you complain to Him That He does not give an account of all His doings? 14Indeed God speaks once, Or twice, yet no one notices it. 15In a dream, a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls on people, While they slumber in their beds, 16Then He opens the ears of people, And horrifies them with warnings, 17So that He may turn a person away from bad conduct, And keep a man from pride; 18He keeps his soul back from the pit, And his life from perishing by the spear. 19' A person is also rebuked by pain in his bed, And with constant complaint in his bones, 20So that his life loathes bread, And his soul, food that he should crave. 21His flesh wastes away from sight, And his bones, which were not seen, stick out. 22Then his soul comes near to the pit, And his life to those who bring death. 23'If there is an interceding angel for him, One out of a thousand, To remind a person of what is right for him, 24And he is gracious to him, and says, ‘Free him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom’;King James Version

3My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly. 4The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. 5If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up. 6Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay. 7Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.
8Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,
9I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.
10Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,
11He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.
12Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.
13Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.
14For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
15In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
16Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,
17That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
18He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.
19He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:
20So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat.
21His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.
22Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.
23If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:
24Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.

3My words come from my upright heart, and my lips speak with sincerity what they know. 4The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. 5Refute me if you can. Prepare your case against me; take your stand. 6I am just like you before God; I was also pinched off from a piece of clay.
7Fear of me should not terrify you; no pressure from me should weigh you down.
8Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard these very words:
9"I am pure, without transgression; I am clean and have no iniquity.
10But he finds reasons to oppose me; he regards me as his enemy.
11He puts my feet in the stocks; he stands watch over all my paths."
12But I tell you that you are wrong in this matter, since God is greater than man.
13Why do you take him to court for not answering anything a person asks?
14For God speaks time and again, but a person may not notice it.
15In a dream, a vision in the night, when deep sleep comes over people as they slumber on their beds,
16he uncovers their ears and terrifies them with warnings,
17in order to turn a person from his actions and suppress the pride of a person.
18God spares his soul from the Pit, his life from crossing the river of death.
19A person may be disciplined on his bed with pain and constant distress in his bones,
20so that he detests bread, and his soul despises his favorite food.
21His flesh wastes away to nothing, and his unseen bones stick out.
22He draws near to the Pit, and his life to the executioners.
23If there is an angel on his side, one mediator out of a thousand, to tell a person what is right for him
24and to be gracious to him and say, "Spare him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom,"

Chapter 33
3I speak with all sincerity; I speak the truth. 4For the Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. 5Answer me, if you can; make your case and take your stand. 6Look, you and I both belong to God. I, too, was formed from clay. 7So you don’t need to be afraid of me. I won’t come down hard on you.
8'You have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard your very words.
9You said, ‘I am pure; I am without sin; I am innocent; I have no guilt.
10God is picking a quarrel with me, and he considers me his enemy.
11He puts my feet in the stocks and watches my every move.’
12'But you are wrong, and I will show you why. For God is greater than any human being.
13So why are you bringing a charge against him? Why say he does not respond to people’s complaints?
14For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it.
15He speaks in dreams, in visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds.
16He whispers in their ears and terrifies them with warnings.
17He makes them turn from doing wrong; he keeps them from pride.
18He protects them from the grave, from crossing over the river of death.

3My words declare the uprightness of my heart, and what my lips know they speak sincerely. 4The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. 5Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand. 6Behold, I am toward God as you are; I too was pinched off from a piece of clay. 7Behold, no fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy upon you. 8“Surely you have spoken in my ears, and I have heard the sound of your words. 9You say, ‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, and there is no iniquity in me. 10Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy, 11he puts my feet in the stocks and watches all my paths.’ 12“Behold, in this you are not right. 7No fear of me should alarm you, nor should my hand be heavy on you.
8But you have said in my hearing-- I heard the very words--
9I am pure, I have done no wrong; I am clean and free from sin.
10Yet God has found fault with me; he considers me his enemy.
11He fastens my feet in shackles; he keeps close watch on all my paths.'
12But I tell you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than any mortal.
13Why do you complain to him that he responds to no one's words?
14For God does speak--now one way, now another-- though no one perceives it.
15In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds,
16he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings,
17to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride,
18to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword.
19Or someone may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in their bones,
20so that their body finds food repulsive and their soul loathes the choicest meal.
21Their flesh wastes away to nothing, and their bones, once hidden, now stick out.
22They draw near to the pit, and their life to the messengers of death.
23Yet if there is an angel at their side, a messenger, one out of a thousand, sent to tell them how to be upright,
24and he is gracious to that person and says to God, 'Spare them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for them--
