Jeremiah 3:4-9
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 3
4
Have you not just now called to Me,
‘My Father, You are the friend of my youth?
5
Will He be angry forever,
Or keep
His anger
to the end?’
Behold, you have spoken
And have done evil things,
And you have had your own way.'
6
Then the
Lord
said to me in the days of King Josiah, 'Have you seen what faithless Israel did? She went up on every high hill and under every leafy tree, and she prostituted herself there.
7
Yet I thought, ‘After she has done all these things she will return to Me’; but she did not return, and her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
8
And I saw that for all the adulteries of faithless Israel, I had sent her away and given her a certificate of divorce, yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear; but she went and prostituted herself also.
9
And because of the thoughtlessness of her prostitution, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and trees.
King James Version
Chapter 3
4
Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?
5
Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.
6
The
Lord
said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot.
7
And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
8
And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.
9
And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 3
4
Haven’t you recently called to me, "My Father.
You were my friend in my youth.
5
Will he bear a grudge forever?
Will he be endlessly infuriated?"
This is what you have said,
but you have done the evil things
you are capable of.
6
In the days of King Josiah the
Lord
asked me, "Have you seen what unfaithful Israel has done? She has ascended every high hill and gone under every green tree to prostitute herself there.
7
I thought, ‘After she has done all these things, she will return to me.’ But she didn’t return, and her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
8
I observed that it was because unfaithful Israel had committed adultery that I had sent her away and had given her a certificate of divorce. Nevertheless, her treacherous sister Judah was not afraid but also went and prostituted herself.
9
Indifferent to her prostitution, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and trees.
New Living Translation
Chapter 3
4
Yet you say to me,
‘Father, you have been my guide since my youth.
5
Surely you won’t be angry forever!
Surely you can forget about it!’
So you talk,
but you keep on doing all the evil you can.'
6
During the reign of King Josiah, the
Lord
said to me, 'Have you seen what fickle Israel has done? Like a wife who commits adultery, Israel has worshiped other gods on every hill and under every green tree.
7
I thought, ‘After she has done all this, she will return to me.’ But she did not return, and her faithless sister Judah saw this.
8
She saw that I divorced faithless Israel because of her adultery. But that treacherous sister Judah had no fear, and now she, too, has left me and given herself to prostitution.
9
Israel treated it all so lightly — she thought nothing of committing adultery by worshiping idols made of wood and stone. So now the land has been polluted.
English Standard Version
Chapter 3
4
Have you not just now called to me,
‘My father, you are the friend of my youth —
5
will he be angry forever,
will he be indignant to the end?’
Behold, you have spoken,
but you have done all the evil that you could."
6
The
Lord
said to me in the days of King Josiah: "Have you seen what she did, that faithless one, Israel, how she went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and there played the whore?
7
And I thought, ‘After she has done all this she will return to me,’ but she did not return, and her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
8
She saw that for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel, I had sent her away with a decree of divorce. Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too went and played the whore.
9
Because she took her whoredom lightly, she polluted the land, committing adultery with stone and tree.
New International Version
Chapter 3
4
Have you not just called to me:
‘My Father, my friend from my youth,
5
will you always be angry?
Will your wrath continue forever?’
This is how you talk,
but you do all the evil you can."
6
During the reign of King Josiah, the
Lord
said to me, "Have you seen what faithless Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree and has committed adultery there.
7
I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me but she did not, and her unfaithful sister Judah saw it.
8
I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery.
9
Because Israel’s immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stone and wood.
New King James Version
Chapter 3
4
Will you not from this time cry to Me,
‘My Father, You
are
the guide of my youth?
5
Will He remain angry forever?
Will He keep it to the end?’
Behold, you have spoken and done evil things,
As you were able.”
6
The
Lord
said also to me in the days of Josiah the king: “Have you seen what backsliding Israel has done? She has gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there played the harlot.
7
And I said, after she had done all these
things,
‘Return to Me.’ But she did not return. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
8
Then I saw that for all the causes for which backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a certificate of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also.
9
So it came to pass, through her casual harlotry, that she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and trees.
