Exodus 3:13-20
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 3
13
Then Moses said to God, 'Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?'
14
And God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM'; and He said, 'This is what you shall say to the sons of Israel: ‘ I AM has sent me to you.’?'
15
God furthermore said to Moses, 'This is what you shall say to the sons of Israel: ‘The
Lord
, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is the name for all generations
to use
to call upon Me.
16
Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘The
Lord
, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has appeared to me, saying, 'I am indeed concerned about you and what has been done to you in Egypt.
17
So I said, I will bring you up out of the oppression of Egypt to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, to a land flowing with milk and honey.
18
Then they will pay attention to what you say; and you with the elders of Israel will come to the king of Egypt, and you will say to him, ‘The
Lord
, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. So now, please let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to the
Lord
our God.’
19
But I know that the king of Egypt will not permit you to go, except under compulsion.
20
So I will reach out with My hand and strike Egypt with all My miracles which I shall do in the midst of it; and after that he will let you go.
King James Version
Chapter 3
13
And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
14
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
15
And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The
Lord
God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.
16
Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The
Lord
God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt:
17
And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey.
18
And they shall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The
Lord
God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we beseech thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the
Lord
our God.
19
And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.
20
And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go.

Chapter 3
13
Then Moses asked God, "If I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what should I tell them?"
14
God replied to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you."
15
God also said to Moses, "Say this to the Israelites: The
Lord
, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever; this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.
16
"Go and assemble the elders of Israel and say to them: The
Lord
, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to me and said: I have paid close attention to you and to what has been done to you in Egypt.
17
And I have promised you that I will bring you up from the misery of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.
18
They will listen to what you say. Then you, along with the elders of Israel, must go to the king of Egypt and say to him: The
Lord
, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now please let us go on a three-day trip into the wilderness so that we may sacrifice to the
Lord
our God.
19
"However, I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go, even under force from a strong hand.
20
But when I stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all my miracles that I will perform in it, after that, he will let you go.
New Living Translation
Chapter 3
13
But Moses protested, 'If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?'
14
God replied to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM. Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.'
15
God also said to Moses, 'Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors — the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob — has sent me to you.
This is my eternal name,
my name to remember for all generations.
16
Now go and call together all the elders of Israel. Tell them, ‘Yahweh, the God of your ancestors — the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — has appeared to me. He told me, 'I have been watching closely, and I see how the Egyptians are treating you.
17
I have promised to rescue you from your oppression in Egypt. I will lead you to a land flowing with milk and honey — the land where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites now live.'’
18
The elders of Israel will accept your message. Then you and the elders must go to the king of Egypt and tell him, ‘The
Lord
, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. So please let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the
Lord
, our God.’
19
But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand forces him.
20
So I will raise my hand and strike the Egyptians, performing all kinds of miracles among them. Then at last he will let you go.
