2 Kings 8:7-12
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 8
7
Then Elisha came to Damascus. Now Ben-hadad, the king of Aram, was sick, and it was told to him, saying, 'The man of God has come here.'
8
And the king said to Hazael, 'Take a gift in your hand and go to meet the man of God, and inquire of the
Lord
by him, saying, ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’?'
9
So Hazael went to meet him and took a gift in his hand, even every kind of good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ loads; and he came and stood before him and said, 'Your son Ben-hadad king of Aram has sent me to you, saying, ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’?'
10
Then Elisha said to him, 'Go, say to him, ‘You will certainly recover’; but the
Lord
has shown me that he will certainly die.'
11
And he stared steadily
at him
until
Hazael
was embarrassed, and
then
the man of God wept.
12
And Hazael said, 'Why is my lord weeping?' And he answered, 'Because I know the evil that you will do to the sons of Israel: you will set their fortified cities on fire, you will kill their young men with the sword, their little ones you will smash to pieces, and you will rip up their pregnant women.'
King James Version
Chapter 8
7
And Elisha came to Damascus; and Benhadad the king of Syria was sick; and it was told him, saying, The man of God is come hither.
8
And the king said unto Hazael, Take a present in thine hand, and go, meet the man of God, and enquire of the
Lord
by him, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
9
So Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels' burden, and came and stood before him, and said, Thy son Benhadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
10
And Elisha said unto him, Go, say unto him, Thou mayest certainly recover: howbeit the
Lord
hath shewed me that he shall surely die.
11
And he settled his countenance stedfastly, until he was ashamed: and the man of God wept.
12
And Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child.

Chapter 8
7
Elisha came to Damascus while King Ben-hadad of Aram was sick, and the king was told, "The man of God has come here."
8
So the king said to Hazael, "Take a gift with you and go meet the man of God. Inquire of the
Lord
through him, ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’"
9
Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him a gift: forty camel-loads of all the finest products of Damascus. When he came and stood before him, he said, "Your son, King Ben-hadad of Aram, has sent me to ask you, ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’"
10
Elisha told him, "Go say to him, ‘You are sure to recover.’ But the
Lord
has shown me that he is sure to die."
11
Then he stared steadily at him until he was ashamed. The man of God wept,
12
and Hazael asked, "Why is my lord weeping?" He replied, "Because I know the evil you will do to the people of Israel. You will set their fortresses on fire. You will kill their young men with the sword. You will dash their children to pieces. You will rip open their pregnant women."
New Living Translation
Chapter 8
7
Elisha went to Damascus, the capital of Aram, where King Ben-hadad lay sick. When someone told the king that the man of God had come,
8
the king said to Hazael, 'Take a gift to the man of God. Then tell him to ask the
Lord
, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’'
9
So Hazael loaded down forty camels with the finest products of Damascus as a gift for Elisha. He went to him and said, 'Your servant Ben-hadad, the king of Aram, has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’'
10
And Elisha replied, 'Go and tell him, ‘You will surely recover.’ But actually the
Lord
has shown me that he will surely die!'
11
Elisha stared at Hazael with a fixed gaze until Hazael became uneasy. Then the man of God started weeping.
12
What’s the matter, my lord?' Hazael asked him. Elisha replied, 'I know the terrible things you will do to the people of Israel. You will burn their fortified cities, kill their young men with the sword, dash their little children to the ground, and rip open their pregnant women!'

through him; ask him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’ "
9
Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him as a gift forty camel-loads of all the finest wares of Damascus. He went in and stood before him, and said, "Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’ "
10
Elisha answered, "Go and say to him, ‘You will certainly recover.’ Nevertheless, the
Lord
has revealed to me that he will in fact die."
11
He stared at him with a fixed gaze until Hazael was embarrassed. Then the man of God began to weep.
12
"Why is my lord weeping?" asked Hazael. "Because I know the harm you will do to the Israelites," he answered. "You will set fire to their fortified places, kill their young men with the sword, dash their little children to the ground, and rip open their pregnant women."
