2 Kings 4:6-22

New American Standard Bible

Chapter 4

6 When the containers were full, she said to her son, 'Bring me another container.' But he said to her, 'There are no more containers.' Then the oil stopped. 7 So she came and told the man of God. And he said, 'Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on the rest.'
8 Now a day came when Elisha went over to Shunem, where there was a prominent woman, and she urged him to eat food. And so it was, as often as he passed by, that he turned in there to eat food. 9 And she said to her husband, 'Behold now, I am aware that this is a holy man of God passing by us repeatedly. 10 Please, let’s make a little walled upper room, and let’s set up a bed for him there, and a table, a chair, and a lampstand; then it shall be, when he comes to us, that he can turn in there.'
11 Now one day he came there, and turned in to the upper room and rested. 12 Then he said to his servant Gehazi, 'Call this Shunammite.' And when he had called her, she stood before him. 13 And he said to him, 'Say now to her, ‘Behold, you have taken trouble for us with all this care; what can I do for you? Would you like me to speak for you to the king or to the commander of the army?’?' But she answered, 'I live among my own people.' 14 So he said, 'What then is to be done for her?' And Gehazi answered, 'It is a fact that she has no son, and her husband is old.' 15 He then said, 'Call her.' When he had called her, she stood in the doorway. 16 Then he said, 'At this season next year, you are going to embrace a son.' And she said, 'No, my lord, you man of God, do not lie to your servant.'
17 Now the woman conceived and gave birth to a son at that season the next year, as Elisha had told her.
18 When the child was grown, the day came that he went out to his father, to the reapers. 19 And he said to his father, 'My head, my head!' And his father said to his servant, 'Carry him to his mother.' 20 When he had carried him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. 21 And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door behind him and left. 22 Then she called to her husband and said, 'Please send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so that I may run to the man of God and return.'

Chapter 4

6 And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. 7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.
8 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. 9 And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. 10 Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither. 11 And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there. 12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him. 13 And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people. 14 And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old. 15 And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door. 16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid. 17 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.
18 And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers. 19 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother. 20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. 21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out. 22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.

Chapter 4

6 When they were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another container."But he replied, "There aren't any more." Then the oil stopped.
7 She went and told the man of God, and he said, "Go sell the oil and pay your debt; you and your sons can live on the rest."
8 One day Elisha went to Shunem. A prominent woman who lived there persuaded him to eat some food. So whenever he passed by, he stopped there to eat. 9 Then she said to her husband, "I know that the one who often passes by here is a holy man of God, 10 so let's make a small, walled-in upper room and put a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp there for him. Whenever he comes, he can stay there."
11 One day he came there and stopped at the upstairs room to lie down. 12 He ordered his attendant Gehazi, "Call this Shunammite woman." So he called her and she stood before him.
13 Then he said to Gehazi, "Say to her, 'Look, you've gone to all this trouble for us. What can we do for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army? ' "She answered, "I am living among my own people."
14 So he asked, "Then what should be done for her? "Gehazi answered, "Well, she has no son, and her husband is old."
15 "Call her," Elisha said. So Gehazi called her, and she stood in the doorway.
16 Elisha said, "At this time next year you will have a son in your arms."Then she said, "No, my lord. Man of God, do not lie to your servant."
17 The woman conceived and gave birth to a son at the same time the following year, as Elisha had promised her.
18 The child grew and one day went out to his father and the harvesters.
19 Suddenly he complained to his father, "My head! My head! "His father told his servant, "Carry him to his mother." 20 So he picked him up and took him to his mother. The child sat on her lap until noon and then died. 21 She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, shut him in, and left.
22 She summoned her husband and said, "Please send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so I can hurry to the man of God and come back again."

Chapter 4

6 Soon every container was full to the brim! 'Bring me another jar,' she said to one of her sons. 'There aren't any more!' he told her. And then the olive oil stopped flowing.
7 When she told the man of God what had happened, he said to her, 'Now sell the olive oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on what is left over.'
8 One day Elisha went to the town of Shunem. A wealthy woman lived there, and she urged him to come to her home for a meal. After that, whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for something to eat.
9 She said to her husband, 'I am sure this man who stops in from time to time is a holy man of God. 10 Let's build a small room for him on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then he will have a place to stay whenever he comes by.'
11 One day Elisha returned to Shunem, and he went up to this upper room to rest. 12 He said to his servant Gehazi, 'Tell the woman from Shunem I want to speak to her.' When she appeared,
13 Elisha said to Gehazi, 'Tell her, 'We appreciate the kind concern you have shown us. What can we do for you? Can we put in a good word for you to the king or to the commander of the army?'' 'No,' she replied, 'my family takes good care of me.'
14 Later Elisha asked Gehazi, 'What can we do for her?' Gehazi replied, 'She doesn't have a son, and her husband is an old man.'
15 'Call her back again,' Elisha told him. When the woman returned, Elisha said to her as she stood in the doorway,
16 'Next year at this time you will be holding a son in your arms!' 'No, my lord!' she cried. 'O man of God, don't deceive me and get my hopes up like that.'
17 But sure enough, the woman soon became pregnant. And at that time the following year she had a son, just as Elisha had said.
18 One day when her child was older, he went out to help his father, who was working with the harvesters.
19 Suddenly he cried out, 'My head hurts! My head hurts!' His father said to one of the servants, 'Carry him home to his mother.'
20 So the servant took him home, and his mother held him on her lap. But around noontime he died. 21 She carried him up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, then shut the door and left him there. 22 She sent a message to her husband: 'Send one of the servants and a donkey so that I can hurry to the man of God and come right back.'
