New American Standard Bible

Chapter 4

17 Now the woman conceived and gave birth to a son at that season the next year, as Elisha had told her.
18 When the child was grown, the day came that he went out to his father, to the reapers. 19 And he said to his father, 'My head, my head!' And his father said to his servant, 'Carry him to his mother.' 20 When he had carried him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. 21 And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door behind him and left. 22 Then she called to her husband and said, 'Please send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so that I may run to the man of God and return.' 23 But he said, 'Why are you going to him today? It is neither new moon nor Sabbath.' So she just said, 'It will be fine.' 24 Then she saddled the donkey and said to her servant, 'Drive the donkey and go on; do not slow down the pace for me unless I tell you.'
25 So she went on and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When the man of God saw her at a distance, he said to Gehazi his servant, 'Behold, that person there is the Shunammite. 26 Please run now to meet her and say to her, ‘Is it going well for you? Is it going well for your husband? Is it going well for the child?’?' Then she answered, 'It is going well.' 27 But she came to the man of God at the hill and took hold of his feet. And Gehazi came up to push her away, but the man of God said, 'Leave her alone, for her soul is troubled within her; and the LORD has concealed it from me and has not informed me.' 28 Then she said, 'Did I ask for a son from my lord? Did I not say, ‘Do not give me false hope’?'
29 Then he said to Gehazi, 'Get ready and take my staff in your hand, and go; if you meet anyone, do not greet him, and if anyone greets you, do not reply to him. And lay my staff on the boy’s face.' 30 The mother of the boy said, 'As surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, I will not leave you.' So he got up and followed her. 31 Then Gehazi went on ahead of them and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So he returned to meet him and informed him, saying, 'The boy has not awakened.'
32 When Elisha entered the house, behold the boy was dead, laid on his bed. 33 So he entered and shut the door behind them both, and he prayed to the LORD.

Chapter 4

17 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.
18 And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers. 19 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother. 20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. 21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out. 22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again. 23 And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well. 24 Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee. 25 So she went and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite: 26 Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well. 27 And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the LORD hath hid it from me, and hath not told me. 28 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me? 29 Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child. 30 And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her. 31 And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked. 32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. 33 He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD.

Chapter 4

17 The woman conceived and gave birth to a son at the same time the following year, as Elisha had promised her.
18 The child grew and one day went out to his father and the harvesters.
19 Suddenly he complained to his father, "My head! My head! "His father told his servant, "Carry him to his mother." 20 So he picked him up and took him to his mother. The child sat on her lap until noon and then died. 21 She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, shut him in, and left.
22 She summoned her husband and said, "Please send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so I can hurry to the man of God and come back again."
23 But he said, "Why go to him today? It's not a New Moon or a Sabbath."She replied, "It's all right."
24 Then she saddled the donkey and said to her servant, "Go fast; don't slow the pace for me unless I tell you."
25 So she came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When the man of God saw her at a distance, he said to his attendant Gehazi, "Look, there's the Shunammite woman.
26 Run out to meet her and ask, 'Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your son all right? ' "And she answered, "It's all right."
27 When she came up to the man of God at the mountain, she clung to his feet. Gehazi came to push her away, but the man of God said, "Leave her alone--she is in severe anguish, and the Lord has hidden it from me. He hasn't told me."
28 Then she said, "Did I ask my lord for a son? Didn't I say, 'Do not lie to me? ' "
29 So Elisha said to Gehazi, "Tuck your mantle under your belt, take my staff with you, and go. If you meet anyone, don't stop to greet him, and if a man greets you, don't answer him. Then place my staff on the boy's face."
30 The boy's mother said to Elisha, "As the Lord lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So he got up and followed her.
31 Gehazi went ahead of them and placed the staff on the boy's face, but there was no sound or sign of life, so he went back to meet Elisha and told him, "The boy didn't wake up."
32 When Elisha got to the house, he discovered the boy lying dead on his bed. 33 So he went in, closed the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the Lord.

Chapter 4

17 But sure enough, the woman soon became pregnant. And at that time the following year she had a son, just as Elisha had said.
18 One day when her child was older, he went out to help his father, who was working with the harvesters.
19 Suddenly he cried out, 'My head hurts! My head hurts!' His father said to one of the servants, 'Carry him home to his mother.'
20 So the servant took him home, and his mother held him on her lap. But around noontime he died. 21 She carried him up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, then shut the door and left him there. 22 She sent a message to her husband: 'Send one of the servants and a donkey so that I can hurry to the man of God and come right back.'
23 'Why go today?' he asked. 'It is neither a new moon festival nor a Sabbath.' But she said, 'It will be all right.'
24 So she saddled the donkey and said to the servant, 'Hurry! Don't slow down unless I tell you to.'
25 As she approached the man of God at Mount Carmel, Elisha saw her in the distance. He said to Gehazi, 'Look, the woman from Shunem is coming.
26 Run out to meet her and ask her, 'Is everything all right with you, your husband, and your child?'' 'Yes,' the woman told Gehazi, 'everything is fine.'
27 But when she came to the man of God at the mountain, she fell to the ground before him and caught hold of his feet. Gehazi began to push her away, but the man of God said, 'Leave her alone. She is deeply troubled, but the LORD has not told me what it is.'
28 Then she said, 'Did I ask you for a son, my lord? And didn't I say, 'Don't deceive me and get my hopes up'?'
29 Then Elisha said to Gehazi, 'Get ready to travel; take my staff and go! Don't talk to anyone along the way. Go quickly and lay the staff on the child's face.'
30 But the boy's mother said, 'As surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, I won't go home unless you go with me.' So Elisha returned with her.
31 Gehazi hurried on ahead and laid the staff on the child's face, but nothing happened. There was no sign of life. He returned to meet Elisha and told him, 'The child is still dead.'
32 When Elisha arrived, the child was indeed dead, lying there on the prophet's bed. 33 He went in alone and shut the door behind him and prayed to the LORD.

And lay my staff on the face of the child.” 30 Then the mother of the child said, “As the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So he arose and followed her. 31 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the face of the child, but there was no sound or sign of life. 30 But the child's mother said, 'As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you.' So he got up and followed her.
