2 Kings 2:8-19
New American Standard Bible
9When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, 'Ask me what I should do for you before I am taken from you.' And Elisha said, 'Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.'
10He said, 'You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.'
11And as they were walking along and talking, behold, a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and they separated the two of them. Then Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven.
12And Elisha was watching it and he was crying out, 'My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!' And he did not see Elijah again. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.
13He also took up the coat of Elijah that had fallen from him, and he went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan.
14Then he took the coat of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the waters, and said, 'Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?' And when he also had struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha crossed over.
15Now when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho opposite him saw him, they said, 'The spirit of Elijah has settled on Elisha.' And they came to meet him and bowed down to the ground before him.
16Then they said to him, 'Behold now, there are with your servants fifty strong men; please let them go and search for your master, in case the Spirit of the Lord has taken him up and cast him on some mountain or into some valley.' But he said, 'You shall not send anyone.'
17Yet when they urged him until he was ashamed to refuse, he said, 'Send them.' So they sent fifty men; and they searched for three days, but did not find him.
18They returned to him while he was staying in Jericho; and he said to them, 'Did I not say to you, ‘Do not go’?'
King James Version
9And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
10And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
11And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
12And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
13He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
14And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.
15And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
16And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest peradventure the Spirit of the Lord hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send.
17And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not.
18And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not?
19And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is naught, and the ground barren.
Christian Standard Bible
12As Elisha watched, he kept crying out, "My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel!" When he could see him no longer, he took hold of his own clothes, tore them in two,
13picked up the mantle that had fallen off Elijah, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.
14He took the mantle Elijah had dropped, and he struck the water. "Where is the Lord God of Elijah?" he asked. He struck the water himself, and it parted to the right and the left, and Elisha crossed over.
New Living Translation
11As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven.
12Elisha saw it and cried out, 'My father! My father! I see the chariots and charioteers of Israel!' And as they disappeared from sight, Elisha tore his clothes in distress.
13Elisha picked up Elijah’s cloak, which had fallen when he was taken up. Then Elisha returned to the bank of the Jordan River.
14He struck the water with Elijah’s cloak and cried out, 'Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?' Then the river divided, and Elisha went across.
16Sir,' they said, 'just say the word and fifty of our strongest men will search the wilderness for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has left him on some mountain or in some valley.' 'No,' Elisha said, 'don’t send them.'
17But they kept urging him until they shamed him into agreeing, and he finally said, 'All right, send them.' So fifty men searched for three days but did not find Elijah.
18Elisha was still at Jericho when they returned. 'Didn’t I tell you not to go?' he asked.
