2 Kings 1:6-15
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 1
6They said to him, 'A man came up to meet us and said to us, ‘Go, return to the king who sent you and say to him, 'This is what the Lord says: ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not get down from the bed upon which you have lain, but you shall certainly die.’?'?’?' 7Then he said to them, 'What did the man look like, who came up to meet you and spoke these words to you?' 8And they said to him, 'He was a hairy man with a leather belt worn around his waist.' And he said, 'It is Elijah the Tishbite.'
9Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty men. And he went up to him, and behold, he was sitting on the top of the hill. And he said to him, 'You man of God, the king says, ‘Come down.’?'
10But Elijah replied to the captain of fifty, 'If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.' Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.
11So the king again sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty men. And he said to him, 'You man of God, this is what the king says: ‘Come down quickly!’?'
12But Elijah replied to them, 'If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.' Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.
13So the king again sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty men. When the third captain of fifty went up, he came and bowed down on his knees before Elijah, and begged him and said to him, 'You man of God, please let my life and the lives of these fifty servants of yours be precious in your sight.
14Behold, fire came down from heaven and consumed the first two captains of fifty with their fifties; but now let my life be precious in your sight.'
15And the angel of the Lord said to Elijah, 'Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.' So he got up and went down with him to the king.
King James Version
Chapter 1
6And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that thou sendest to inquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. 7And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words? 8And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.
9Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down.
10And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
11Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly.
12And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
13And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.
14Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight.
15And the angel of the LORD said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.

13Then the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. The third captain went up and fell on his knees in front of Elijah and begged him, "Man of God, please let my life and the lives of these fifty servants of yours be precious to you.
14Already fire has come down from heaven and consumed the first two captains with their companies, but this time let my life be precious to you."
New Living Translation
13Once more the king sent a third captain with fifty men. But this time the captain went up the hill and fell to his knees before Elijah. He pleaded with him, 'O man of God, please spare my life and the lives of these, your fifty servants.
14See how the fire from heaven came down and destroyed the first two groups. But now please spare my life!'

Therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.’” 7He said to them, “What kind of man was he who came to meet you and told you these things?” 8They answered him, “He wore a garment of hair, with a belt of leather about his waist.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”
