2 Kings 17:1-4
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 17
1
In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea the son of Elah became king over Israel in Samaria,
and reigned
for nine years.
2
He did evil in the sight of the
Lord
, only not as the kings of Israel who preceded him.
3
Shalmaneser the king of Assyria marched against him, and Hoshea became his servant and paid him tribute.
4
But the king of Assyria uncovered a conspiracy by Hoshea, who had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and had
then
brought no tribute to the king of Assyria, as
he had done
year by year; so the king of Assyria arrested him and confined him in prison.
King James Version
Chapter 17
1
In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah began Hoshea the son of Elah to reign in Samaria over Israel nine years.
2
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the
Lord
, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him.
3
Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and gave him presents.
4
And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.

Chapter 17
1
In the twelfth year of Judah’s King Ahaz, Hoshea son of Elah became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned nine years.
2
He did what was evil in the
Lord
’s sight, but not like the kings of Israel who preceded him.
3
King Shalmaneser of Assyria attacked him, and Hoshea became his vassal and paid him tribute.
4
But the king of Assyria caught Hoshea in a conspiracy: He had sent envoys to So king of Egypt and had not paid tribute to the king of Assyria as in previous years. Therefore the king of Assyria arrested him and put him in prison.
New Living Translation
Chapter 17
1
Hoshea son of Elah began to rule over Israel in the twelfth year of King Ahaz’s reign in Judah. He reigned in Samaria nine years.
2
He did what was evil in the
Lord
’s sight, but not to the same extent as the kings of Israel who ruled before him.
3
King Shalmaneser of Assyria attacked King Hoshea, so Hoshea was forced to pay heavy tribute to Assyria.
4
But Hoshea stopped paying the annual tribute and conspired against the king of Assyria by asking King So of Egypt to help him shake free of Assyria’s power. When the king of Assyria discovered this treachery, he seized Hoshea and put him in prison.
