1 Samuel 16:2-6
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 16
2
But Samuel said, 'How can I go? When Saul hears
about it,
he will kill me.' But the
Lord
said, 'Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the
Lord
.’
3
And you shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will let you know what you shall do; and you shall anoint for Me the one whom I designate to you.'
4
So Samuel did what the
Lord
told
him,
and he came to Bethlehem. Then the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, 'Do you come in peace?'
5
And he said, 'In peace; I have come to sacrifice to the
Lord
. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.' He also consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6
When they entered, he looked at Eliab and thought, 'Surely the
Lord
’S anointed is
standing
before Him.'
King James Version
Chapter 16
2
And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the
Lord
said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the
Lord
.
3
And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
4
And Samuel did that which the
Lord
spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
5
And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the
Lord
: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6
And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the
Lord
'S anointed is before him.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 16
2
Samuel asked, "How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me!" The
Lord
answered, "Take a young cow with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the
Lord
.’
3
Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will let you know what you are to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate to you."
4
Samuel did what the
Lord
directed and went to Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they trembled and asked, "Do you come in peace?"
5
"In peace," he replied. "I’ve come to sacrifice to the
Lord
. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice." Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6
When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, "Certainly the
Lord
’s anointed one is here before him."
New Living Translation
Chapter 16
2
But Samuel asked, 'How can I do that? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.' 'Take a heifer with you,' the
Lord
replied, 'and say that you have come to make a sacrifice to the
Lord
.
3
Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you which of his sons to anoint for me.'
4
So Samuel did as the
Lord
instructed. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town came trembling to meet him. 'What’s wrong?' they asked. 'Do you come in peace?'
5
Yes,' Samuel replied. 'I have come to sacrifice to the
Lord
. Purify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.' Then Samuel performed the purification rite for Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice, too.
6
When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, 'Surely this is the
Lord
’s anointed!'
