1 Samuel 15:17-20
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 15
17
So Samuel said, 'Is it not
true,
though you were insignificant in your own eyes,
that
you
became
the head of the tribes of Israel? For the
Lord
anointed you as king over Israel.
18
And the
Lord
sent you on a mission, and said, ‘Go and completely destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are eliminated.’
19
Why then did you not obey the voice of the
Lord
? Instead, you loudly rushed upon the spoils and did what was evil in the sight of the
Lord
!'
20
Then Saul said to Samuel, 'I did obey the voice of the
Lord
, for I went on the mission on which the
Lord
sent me; and I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have completely destroyed the Amalekites.
King James Version
Chapter 15
17
And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the
Lord
anointed thee king over Israel?
18
And the
Lord
sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
19
Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the
Lord
, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the
Lord
?
20
And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the
Lord
, and have gone the way which the
Lord
sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 15
17
Samuel continued, "Although you once considered yourself unimportant, have you not become the leader of the tribes of Israel? The
Lord
anointed you king over Israel
18
and then sent you on a mission and said: ‘Go and completely destroy the sinful Amalekites. Fight against them until you have annihilated them.’
19
So why didn’t you obey the
Lord
? Why did you rush on the plunder and do what was evil in the
Lord
’s sight?"
20
"But I did obey the
Lord
!" Saul answered. "I went on the mission the
Lord
gave me: I brought back King Agag of Amalek, and I completely destroyed the Amalekites.
New Living Translation
Chapter 15
17
And Samuel told him, 'Although you may think little of yourself, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel? The
Lord
has anointed you king of Israel.
18
And the
Lord
sent you on a mission and told you, ‘Go and completely destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, until they are all dead.’
19
Why haven’t you obeyed the
Lord
? Why did you rush for the plunder and do what was evil in the
Lord
’s sight?'
20
But I did obey the
Lord
,' Saul insisted. 'I carried out the mission he gave me. I brought back King Agag, but I destroyed everyone else.

Lord
anointed you king over Israel.

And the
Lord
sent you on a mission and said, ‘Go, devote to destruction the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’

Lord
?"
20
And Saul said to Samuel, "I have obeyed the voice of the
Lord
. I have gone on the mission on which the
Lord
sent me. I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have devoted the Amalekites to destruction.
