1 Samuel 1:9-13
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 1
9
Then Hannah got up after eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the temple of the
Lord
.
10
She, greatly distressed, prayed to the
Lord
and wept bitterly.
11
And she made a vow and said, '
Lord
of armies, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your bond-servant and remember me, and not forget Your bond-servant, but will give Your bond-servant a son, then I will give him to the
Lord
all the days of his life, and a razor shall never come on his head.'
12
Now it came about, as she continued praying before the
Lord
, that Eli was watching her mouth.
13
As for Hannah, she was speaking in her heart, only her lips were quivering, but her voice was not heard. So Eli thought that she was drunk.
King James Version
Chapter 1
9
So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the
Lord
.
10
And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the
Lord
, and wept sore.
11
And she vowed a vow, and said, O
Lord
of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the
Lord
all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
12
And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the
Lord
, that Eli marked her mouth.
13
Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.

Lord
all the days of his life, and his hair will never be cut."
12
While she continued praying in the
Lord

Hannah was praying silently, and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. Eli thought she was drunk

Lord
of Heaven’s Armies, if you will look upon my sorrow and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will give him back to you. He will be yours for his entire lifetime, and as a sign that he has been dedicated to the
Lord
, his hair will never be cut. '
12
As she was praying to the

, Eli watched her.
13
Seeing her lips moving but hearing no sound, he thought she had been drinking.
