1 Kings 20:23-27
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 20
23
Now the servants of the king of Aram said to him, 'Their gods are gods of the mountains; for that reason they were stronger than we. But let us fight them in the plain,
and
we will certainly be stronger than they.
24
Carry out this plan: remove the kings, each from his place, and put governors in their place,
25
and muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain,
and
we will certainly be stronger than they.' And he listened to their voice and did so.
26
So at the turn of the year Ben-hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
27
And the sons of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and they went to meet them; and the sons of Israel camped opposite them like two little flocks of goats, while the Arameans filled the country.
King James Version
Chapter 20
23
And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
24
And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
25
And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
26
And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Benhadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
27
And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 20
23
Now the king of Aram’s servants said to him, "Their gods are gods of the hill country. That’s why they were stronger than we were. Instead, we should fight with them on the plain; then we will certainly be stronger than they are.
24
Also do this: remove each king from his position and appoint captains in their place.
25
Raise another army for yourself like the army you lost—horse for horse, chariot for chariot—and let’s fight with them on the plain; and we will certainly be stronger than they are." The king listened to them and did it.
26
In the spring, Ben-hadad mobilized the Arameans and went up to Aphek to battle Israel.
27
The Israelites mobilized, gathered supplies, and went to fight them. The Israelites camped in front of them like two little flocks of goats, while the Arameans filled the landscape.
New Living Translation
Chapter 20
23
After their defeat, Ben-hadad’s officers said to him, 'The Israelite gods are gods of the hills; that is why they won. But we can beat them easily on the plains.
24
Only this time replace the kings with field commanders!
25
Recruit another army like the one you lost. Give us the same number of horses, chariots, and men, and we will fight against them on the plains. There’s no doubt that we will beat them.' So King Ben-hadad did as they suggested.
26
The following spring he called up the Aramean army and marched out against Israel, this time at Aphek.
27
Israel then mustered its army, set up supply lines, and marched out for battle. But the Israelite army looked like two little flocks of goats in comparison to the vast Aramean forces that filled the countryside!
English Standard Version
Chapter 20
23
And the servants of the king of Syria said to him, "Their gods are gods of the hills, and so they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
24
And do this: remove the kings, each from his post, and put commanders in their places,
25
and muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they." And he listened to their voice and did so.
26
In the spring, Ben-hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
27
And the people of Israel were mustered and were provisioned and went against them. The people of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, but the Syrians filled the country.
New International Version
Chapter 20
23
Meanwhile, the officials of the king of Aram advised him, "Their gods are gods of the hills. That is why they were too strong for us. But if we fight them on the plains, surely we will be stronger than they.
24
Do this: Remove all the kings from their commands and replace them with other officers.
25
You must also raise an army like the one you lost—horse for horse and chariot for chariot—so we can fight Israel on the plains. Then surely we will be stronger than they." He agreed with them and acted accordingly.
26
The next spring Ben-Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
27
When the Israelites were also mustered and given provisions, they marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped opposite them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the countryside.
New King James Version
Chapter 20
23
Then the servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their gods
are
gods of the hills. Therefore they were stronger than we; but if we fight against them in the plain, surely we will be stronger than they.
24
So do this thing: Dismiss the kings, each from his position, and put captains in their places;
25
and you shall muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain; surely we will be stronger than they.” And he listened to their voice and did so.
26
So it was, in the spring of the year, that Ben-Hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
27
And the children of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and they went against them. Now the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, while the Syrians filled the countryside.
