1 Kings 12:11-16
New American Standard Bible
12Then Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, just as the king had directed, saying, 'Return to me on the third day.'
13And the king answered the people harshly, for he ignored the advice of the elders which they had given him,
14and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, 'My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions!'
15So the king did not listen to the people; because it was a turn of events from the Lord, in order to establish His word which the Lord spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
King James Version
Chapter 12
11And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day. 13And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him; 14And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 15Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.Christian Standard Bible
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had ordered: "Return to me on the third day."
13Then the king answered the people harshly. He rejected the advice the elders had given him
14and spoke to them according to the young men's advice: "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with barbed whips."
New Living Translation
12Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to hear Rehoboam’s decision, just as the king had ordered.
13But Rehoboam spoke harshly to the people, for he rejected the advice of the older counselors
14and followed the counsel of his younger advisers. He told the people, 'My father laid heavy burdens on you, but I’m going to make them even heavier! My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions!'
English Standard Version
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king said, “Come to me again the third day.”
13And the king answered the people harshly, and forsaking the counsel that the old men had given him,
14he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.”
15So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of affairs brought about by the LORD that he might fulfill his word, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
New International Version
12Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, 'Come back to me in three days.'
13The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders,
14he followed the advice of the young men and said, 'My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.'
15So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the LORD, to fulfill the word the LORD had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.
New King James Version
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had directed, saying, “Come back to me the third day.”
13Then the king answered the people roughly, and rejected the advice which the elders had given him;
14and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!”
15So the king did not listen to the people; for the turn of events was from the Lord, that He might fulfill His word, which the Lord had spoken by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
