1 Kings 12:26-32
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 12
26
And Jeroboam said in his heart, 'Now the kingdom will return to the house of David.
27
If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the
Lord
in Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will return to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.'
28
So the king consulted, and he made two golden calves; and he said to the people, 'It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem; behold your gods, Israel, that brought you up from the land of Egypt.'
29
And he set up one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.
30
Now this thing became a sin, for the people went
to worship
before the one as far as Dan.
31
And he made houses on high places, and appointed priests from all the people who were not of the sons of Levi.
32
Jeroboam also instituted a feast in the eighth month on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah, and he went up to the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves which he had made. And he stationed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.
King James Version
Chapter 12
26
And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
27
If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the
Lord
at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.
28
Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
29
And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.
30
And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.
31
And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
32
And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

Chapter 12
26
Jeroboam said to himself, "The kingdom might now return to the house of David.
27
If these people regularly go to offer sacrifices in the
Lord
’s temple in Jerusalem, the heart of these people will return to their lord, King Rehoboam of Judah. They will kill me and go back to the king of Judah."
28
So the king sought advice. Then he made two golden calves, and he said to the people, "Going to Jerusalem is too difficult for you. Israel, here are your gods who brought you up from the land of Egypt."
29
He set up one in Bethel, and put the other in Dan.
30
This led to sin; the people walked in procession before one of the calves all the way to Dan.
31
Jeroboam also made shrines on the high places and made priests from the ranks of the people who were not Levites.
32
Jeroboam made a festival in the eighth month on the fifteenth day of the month, like the festival in Judah. He offered sacrifices on the altar; he made this offering in Bethel to sacrifice to the calves he had made. He also stationed the priests in Bethel for the high places he had made.
New Living Translation
Chapter 12
26
Jeroboam thought to himself, 'Unless I am careful, the kingdom will return to the dynasty of David.
27
When these people go to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices at the Temple of the
Lord
, they will again give their allegiance to King Rehoboam of Judah. They will kill me and make him their king instead.'
28
So on the advice of his counselors, the king made two gold calves. He said to the people, 'It is too much trouble for you to worship in Jerusalem. Look, Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of Egypt!'
29
He placed these calf idols in Bethel and in Dan — at either end of his kingdom.
30
But this became a great sin, for the people worshiped the idols, traveling as far north as Dan to worship the one there.
31
Jeroboam also erected buildings at the pagan shrines and ordained priests from the common people — those who were not from the priestly tribe of Levi.
32
And Jeroboam instituted a religious festival in Bethel, held on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in imitation of the annual Festival of Shelters in Judah. There at Bethel he himself offered sacrifices to the calves he had made, and he appointed priests for the pagan shrines he had made.

Chapter 12
26
And Jeroboam said in his heart, "Now the kingdom will turn back to the house of David.
27
If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the temple of the
Lord
at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah."
28
So the king took counsel and made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, "You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt."
29
And he set one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.
30
Then this thing became a sin, for the people went as far as Dan to be before one.
31
He also made temples on high places and appointed priests from among all the people, who were not of the Levites.
32
And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.

Chapter 12
26
Jeroboam thought to himself, "The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David.
27
If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the
Lord
in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam."
28
After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt."
29
One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan.
30
And this thing became a sin; the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.
31
Jeroboam built shrines on high places and appointed priests from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites.
32
He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made.

Jeroboam ordained a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the feast that
