Chapter 17
1And it came about, when David lived in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, 'Look, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under tent curtains.' 2Then Nathan said to David, 'Do whatever is in your heart, for God is with you.'
3But it happened that same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,
4Go and tell David My servant, ‘This is what the Lord says: 'You shall not build a house for Me to dwell in;
5for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up Israel to this day, but I have gone from tent to tent and from one dwelling place to another.

1Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord remaineth under curtains. 2Then Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee.
3And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,
4Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:
5For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.

3But that night the word of God came to Nathan:
4"Go to David my servant and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in.
5From the time I brought Israel out of Egypt until today I have not dwelt in a house; instead, I have moved from one tent site to another, and from one tabernacle location to another.

4'Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord has declared: You are not the one to build a house for me to live in.
5I have never lived in a house, from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until this very day. My home has always been a tent, moving from one place to another in a Tabernacle.

4"Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: It is not you who will build me a house to dwell in.
5For I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up Israel to this day, but I have gone from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling.
