1 Chronicles chapter 13
English Standard Version
1
David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader.
2
And David said to all the assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you and from the
Lord
our God, let us send abroad to our brothers who remain in all the lands of Israel, as well as to the priests and Levites in the cities that have pasturelands, that they may be gathered to us.
3
Then let us bring again the ark of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul."
4
All the assembly agreed to do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
5
So David assembled all Israel from the Nile of Egypt to Lebo-hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
6
And David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim that belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the
Lord
who sits enthroned above the cherubim.
7
And they carried the ark of God on a new cart, from the house of Abinadab, and Uzzah and Ahio were driving the cart.
8
And David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, with song and lyres and harps and tambourines and cymbals and trumpets.
9
And when they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah put out his hand to take hold of the ark, for the oxen stumbled.
10
And the anger of the
Lord
was kindled against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark, and he died there before God.
11
And David was angry because the
Lord
had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzza to this day.
12
And David was afraid of God that day, and he said, "How can I bring the ark of God home to me?"
13
So David did not take the ark home into the city of David, but took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
14
And the ark of God remained with the household of Obed-edom in his house three months. And the
Lord
blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that he had.
New International Version
1
David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.
2
He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the
Lord
our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our people throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us.
3
Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not inquire of it during the reign of Saul."
4
The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.
5
So David assembled all Israel, from the Shihor River in Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim.
6
David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the
Lord
, who is enthroned between the cherubim—the ark that is called by the Name.
7
They moved the ark of God from Abinadab’s house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it.
8
David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, timbrels, cymbals and trumpets.
9
When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled.
10
The
Lord
’s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
11
Then David was angry because the
Lord
’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.
12
David was afraid of God that day and asked, "How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?"
13
He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.
14
The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the
Lord
blessed his household and everything he had.
New American Standard Bible
1
Then David consulted with the captains of the thousands and the hundreds, with every leader.
2
David said to all the assembly of Israel, 'If it
seems
good to you, and if it is from the
Lord
our God, let us send
word
everywhere to our kinsmen who remain in all the land of Israel, and to the priests and Levites who are with them in their cities with pasture lands, that they meet with us;
3
and let us bring back the ark of our God to us, since we did not seek it in the days of Saul.'
4
Then all the assembly said that they would do so, for this was right in the eyes of all the people.
5
So David assembled all Israel together, from the Shihor of Egypt to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
6
David and all Israel went up to Baalah,
that is,
to Kiriath-jearim, which belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, the
Lord
who is enthroned
above
the cherubim, where His name is called.
7
And they carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.
8
David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all
their
might, with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.
9
When they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark, because the oxen nearly overturned
it.
10
But the anger of the
Lord
burned against Uzza, so He struck him because he had put out his hand toward the ark; and he died there before God.
11
Then David became angry because of the
Lord
’S outburst against Uzza; and he called that place Perez-uzza
as it is
to this day.
12
David was afraid of God that day, saying, 'How can I bring the ark of God
home
to me?'
13
So David did not take the ark with him to the city of David, but took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
14
And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house for three months; and the
Lord
blessed the family of Obed-edom and all that he had.
Christian Standard Bible
1
David consulted with all his leaders, the commanders of hundreds and of thousands.
2
Then he said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you, and if this is from the
Lord
our God, let us spread out and send the message to the rest of our relatives in all the districts of Israel, including the priests and Levites in their cities with pasturelands, that they should gather together with us.
3
Then let us bring back the ark of our God, for we did not inquire of him in Saul’s days."
4
Since the proposal seemed right to all the people, the whole assembly agreed to do it.
5
So David assembled all Israel, from the Shihor of Egypt to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
6
David and all Israel went to Baalah (that is, Kiriath-jearim that belongs to Judah) to take from there the ark of God, which bears the name of the
Lord
who is enthroned between the cherubim.
7
At Abinadab’s house they set the ark of God on a new cart. Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart.
8
David and all Israel were dancing with all their might before God with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.
9
When they came to Chidon’s threshing floor, Uzzah reached out to hold the ark because the oxen had stumbled.
10
Then the
Lord
’s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him dead because he had reached out to the ark. So he died there in the presence of God.
11
David was angry because of the
Lord
’s outburst against Uzzah, so he named that place Outburst Against Uzzah, as it is still named today.
12
David feared God that day and said, "How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?"
13
So David did not bring the ark of God home to the city of David; instead, he diverted it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath.
14
The ark of God remained with Obed-edom’s family in his house for three months, and the
Lord
blessed his family and all that he had.
New Living Translation
1
David consulted with all his officials, including the generals and captains of his army.
2
Then he addressed the entire assembly of Israel as follows: 'If you approve and if it is the will of the
Lord
our God, let us send messages to all the Israelites throughout the land, including the priests and Levites in their towns and pasturelands. Let us invite them to come and join us.
3
It is time to bring back the Ark of our God, for we neglected it during the reign of Saul.'
4
The whole assembly agreed to this, for the people could see it was the right thing to do.
5
So David summoned all Israel, from the Shihor Brook of Egypt in the south all the way to the town of Lebo-hamath in the north, to join in bringing the Ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
6
Then David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (also called Kiriath-jearim) to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the name of the
Lord
who is enthroned between the cherubim.
7
They placed the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it from Abinadab’s house. Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart.
8
David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments — lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.
9
But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the Ark.
10
Then the
Lord
’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and he struck him dead because he had laid his hand on the Ark. So Uzzah died there in the presence of God.
11
David was angry because the
Lord
’s anger had burst out against Uzzah. He named that place Perez-uzzah (which means 'to burst out against Uzzah'), as it is still called today.
12
David was now afraid of God, and he asked, 'How can I ever bring the Ark of God back into my care?'
13
So David did not move the Ark into the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath.
14
The Ark of God remained there in Obed-edom’s house for three months, and the
Lord
blessed the household of Obed-edom and everything he owned.
King James Version
1
And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every leader.
2
And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If it seem good unto you, and that it be of the
Lord
our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites which are in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us:
3
And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we enquired not at it in the days of Saul.
4
And all the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
5
So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt even unto the entering of Hemath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjathjearim.
6
And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kirjathjearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the
Lord
, that dwelleth between the cherubims, whose name is called on it.
7
And they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio drave the cart.
8
And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.
9
And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled.
10
And the anger of the
Lord
was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God.
11
And David was displeased, because the
Lord
had made a breach upon Uzza: wherefore that place is called Perezuzza to this day.
12
And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?
13
So David brought not the ark home to himself to the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite.
14
And the ark of God remained with the family of Obededom in his house three months. And the
Lord
blessed the house of Obededom, and all that he had.
New King James Version

And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If
it seems
good to you, and if it is of the
Lord
our God, let us send out to our brethren everywhere
who are
left in all the land of Israel, and with them to the priests and Levites
who are
in their cities
and
their common-lands, that they may gather together to us;
3
and let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we have not inquired at it since the days of Saul.”
4
Then all the assembly said that they would do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
5
So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor in Egypt to as far as the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjath Jearim.
6
And David and all Israel went up to Baalah, to Kirjath Jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God the
Lord
, who dwells
between
the cherubim, where
His
name is proclaimed.
7
So they carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.
8
Then David and all Israel played
music
before God with all
their
might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.
9
And when they came to Chidon’s threshing floor, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark, for the oxen stumbled.
10
Then the anger of the
Lord
was aroused against Uzza, and He struck him because he put his hand to the ark; and he died there before God.
11
And David became angry because of the
Lord
’s outbreak against Uzza; therefore that place is called Perez Uzza to this day.
12
David was afraid of God that day, saying, “How can I bring the ark of God to me?”
13
So David would not move the ark with him into the City of David, but took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.
14
The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house three months. And the
Lord
blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that he had.
