Romans 9:17-21
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 9
17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, 'FOR THIS VERY REASON I RAISED YOU UP, IN ORDER TO DEMONSTRATE MY POWER IN YOU, AND THAT MY NAME MIGHT BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE EARTH.' 18So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires.
19You will say to me then, 'Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?'
20On the contrary, who are you, you foolish person, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, 'Why did you make me like this,' will it?
21Or does the potter not have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one object for honorable use, and another for common use?
King James Version
Chapter 9
17For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. 18Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. 19Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? 20Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? 21Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 9
17For the Scripture tells Pharaoh, I raised you up for this reason so that I may display my power in you and that my name may be proclaimed in the whole earth. 18So then, he has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy and he hardens whom he wants to harden.
19You will say to me, therefore, "Why then does he still find fault? For who resists his will? "
20On the contrary, who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? Will what is formed say to the one who formed it, "Why did you make me like this? "
21Or has the potter no right over the clay, to make from the same lump one piece of pottery for honor and another for dishonor?
New Living Translation
Chapter 9
17For the Scriptures say that God told Pharaoh, 'I have appointed you for the very purpose of displaying my power in you and to spread my fame throughout the earth.' 18So you see, God chooses to show mercy to some, and he chooses to harden the hearts of others so they refuse to listen.
20No, don’t say that. Who are you, a mere human being, to argue with God? Should the thing that was created say to the one who created it, 'Why have you made me like this?'
21When a potter makes jars out of clay, doesn’t he have a right to use the same lump of clay to make one jar for decoration and another to throw garbage into?
English Standard Version
Chapter 9
17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.
19You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?”
20But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?”
21Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?
New International Version
Chapter 9
17For Scripture says to Pharaoh: 'I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.' 18Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.
19One of you will say to me: 'Then why does God still blame us? For who is able to resist his will?'
20But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? 'Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?''
21Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?
