Philemon 1:3-19

4I thank my God always, making mention of you in my prayers,
5because I hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints;
6and I pray that the fellowship of your faith may become effective through the knowledge of every good thing which is in you for the sake of Christ.
7For I have had great joy and comfort in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.
8Therefore, though I have enough confidence in Christ to order you to do what is proper,
9yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you—since I am such a person as Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus—
10I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I fathered in my imprisonment,
11who previously was useless to you, but now is useful both to you and to me.
12I have sent him back to you in person, that is, sending my very heart,
13whom I wanted to keep with me, so that in your behalf he might be at my service in my imprisonment for the gospel;
14but I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that your goodness would not be, in effect, by compulsion, but of your own free will.
15For perhaps it was for this reason that he was separated from you for a while, that you would have him back forever,
16no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.

4I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,
5Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;
6That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.
7For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.
8Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient,
9Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
10I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:
11Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
12Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:
13Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:
14But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
15For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;
16Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
17If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.
18If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;
19I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

6I pray that your participation in the faith may become effective through knowing every good thing that is in us for the glory of Christ.
7For I have great joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.
8For this reason, although I have great boldness in Christ to command you to do what is right,
9I appeal to you, instead, on the basis of love. I, Paul, as an elderly man and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus,
10appeal to you for my son, Onesimus. I became his father while I was in chains.
11Once he was useless to you, but now he is useful both to you and to me.
12I am sending him back to you--I am sending my very own heart.
13I wanted to keep him with me, so that in my imprisonment for the gospel he might serve me in your place.
14But I didn't want to do anything without your consent, so that your good deed might not be out of obligation, but of your own free will.
15For perhaps this is why he was separated from you for a brief time, so that you might get him back permanently,
16no longer as a slave, but more than a slave--as a dearly loved brother. He is especially so to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.

4I always thank my God when I pray for you, Philemon,
5because I keep hearing about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God’s people.
6And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ.
7Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.
8That is why I am boldly asking a favor of you. I could demand it in the name of Christ because it is the right thing for you to do.
9But because of our love, I prefer simply to ask you. Consider this as a request from me — Paul, an old man and now also a prisoner for the sake of Christ Jesus.
10I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus. I became his father in the faith while here in prison.
11Onesimus hasn’t been of much use to you in the past, but now he is very useful to both of us.
12I am sending him back to you, and with him comes my own heart.
13I wanted to keep him here with me while I am in these chains for preaching the Good News, and he would have helped me on your behalf.
14But I didn’t want to do anything without your consent. I wanted you to help because you were willing, not because you were forced.
15It seems you lost Onesimus for a little while so that you could have him back forever.
16He is no longer like a slave to you. He is more than a slave, for he is a beloved brother, especially to me. Now he will mean much more to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.

6and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.
7For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.
8Accordingly, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do what is required,
9yet for love’s sake I prefer to appeal to you—I, Paul, an old man and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus—
10I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I became in my imprisonment.
11(Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.)

13I would have been glad to keep him with me, in order that he might serve me on your behalf during my imprisonment for the gospel,
