Numbers 35:30-34
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 35
30
‘
If
anyone kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the testimony of witnesses, but no person shall be put to death on the testimony of
only
one witness.
31
Moreover, you shall not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer who is condemned to death, but he must be put to death.
32
And you shall not accept a ransom for one who has fled to his city of refuge, so that he may return to live in the land before the death of the priest.
33
So you shall not defile the land in which you
live;
for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of the one who shed it.
34
So you shall not defile the land in which you live, in the midst of which I dwell; for I the
Lord
am dwelling in the midst of the sons of Israel.’?'
King James Version
Chapter 35
30
Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.
31
Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.
32
And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
33
So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.
34
Defile not therefore the land which ye shall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the
Lord
dwell among the children of Israel.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 35
30
"If anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death based on the word of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death based on the testimony of one witness.
31
You are not to accept a ransom for the life of someone who is guilty of murder; he must be put to death.
32
Neither should you accept a ransom for the person who flees to his city of refuge, allowing him to return and live in the land before the death of the high priest.
33
"Do not defile the land where you live, for bloodshed defiles the land, and there can be no atonement for the land because of the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of the person who shed it.
34
Do not make the land unclean where you live and where I dwell; for I, the
Lord
, reside among the Israelites."
New Living Translation
Chapter 35
30
All murderers must be put to death, but only if evidence is presented by more than one witness. No one may be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.
31
Also, you must never accept a ransom payment for the life of someone judged guilty of murder and subject to execution; murderers must always be put to death.
32
And never accept a ransom payment from someone who has fled to a city of refuge, allowing a slayer to return to his property before the death of the high priest.
33
This will ensure that the land where you live will not be polluted, for murder pollutes the land. And no sacrifice except the execution of the murderer can purify the land from murder.
34
You must not defile the land where you live, for I live there myself. I am the
Lord
, who lives among the people of Israel.'
English Standard Version
Chapter 35
30
"If anyone kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the evidence of witnesses. But no person shall be put to death on the testimony of one witness.
31
Moreover, you shall accept no ransom for the life of a murderer, who is guilty of death, but he shall be put to death.
32
And you shall accept no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may return to dwell in the land before the death of the high priest.
33
You shall not pollute the land in which you live, for blood pollutes the land, and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of the one who shed it.
34
You shall not defile the land in which you live, in the midst of which I dwell, for I the
Lord
dwell in the midst of the people of Israel."
New International Version
Chapter 35
30
" ‘Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.
31
" ‘Do not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. They are to be put to death.
32
" ‘Do not accept a ransom for anyone who has fled to a city of refuge and so allow them to go back and live on their own land before the death of the high priest.
33
" ‘Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it.
34
Do not defile the land where you live and where I dwell, for I, the
Lord
, dwell among the Israelites.’ "
New King James Version
Chapter 35
30
Whoever kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the testimony of witnesses; but one witness is not
sufficient
testimony against a person for the death
penalty.
31
Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who
is
guilty of death, but he shall surely be put to death.
32
And you shall take no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may return to dwell in the land before the death of the priest.
33
So you shall not pollute the land where you
are;
for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it.
34
Therefore do not defile the land which you inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell; for I the
Lord
dwell among the children of Israel.’ ”
