Numbers 27:12-21
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 27
12
Then the
Lord
said to Moses, 'Go up to this mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the sons of Israel.
13
When you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, just as Aaron your brother was;
14
for in the wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, you rebelled against My command to treat Me as holy before their eyes at the water.' (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)
15
Then Moses spoke to the
Lord
, saying,
16
May the
Lord
, the God of the spirits of humanity, appoint a man over the congregation,
17
who will go out and come in before them, and lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the
Lord
will not be like sheep that have no shepherd.'
18
So the
Lord
said to Moses, 'Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;
19
and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and commission him in their sight.
20
And you shall put some of your authority on him, so that all the congregation of the sons of Israel will obey
him.
21
Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the
Lord
. At his command they shall go out, and at his command they shall come in,
both
he and all the sons of Israel with him, all the congregation.'
King James Version
Chapter 27
12
And the
Lord
said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.
13
And when thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered.
14
For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before their eyes: that is the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.
15
And Moses spake unto the
Lord
, saying,
16
Let the
Lord
, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,
17
Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the
Lord
be not as sheep which have no shepherd.
18
And the
Lord
said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;
19
And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.
20
And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.
21
And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the
Lord
: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 27
12
Then the
Lord
said to Moses, "Go up this mountain of the Abarim range and see the land that I have given the Israelites.
13
After you have seen it, you will also be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was.
14
When the community quarreled in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you rebelled against my command to demonstrate my holiness in their sight at the waters." Those were the Waters of Meribah-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin.
15
So Moses appealed to the
Lord
,
16
"May the
Lord
, the God who gives breath to all, appoint a man over the community
17
who will go out before them and come back in before them, and who will bring them out and bring them in, so that the
Lord
’s community won’t be like sheep without a shepherd."
18
The
Lord
replied to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.
19
Have him stand before the priest Eleazar and the whole community, and commission him in their sight.
20
Confer some of your authority on him so that the entire Israelite community will obey him.
21
He will stand before the priest Eleazar who will consult the
Lord
for him with the decision of the Urim. He and all the Israelites with him, even the entire community, will go out and come back in at his command."
New Living Translation
Chapter 27
12
One day the
Lord
said to Moses, 'Climb one of the mountains east of the river, and look out over the land I have given the people of Israel.
13
After you have seen it, you will die like your brother, Aaron,
14
for you both rebelled against my instructions in the wilderness of Zin. When the people of Israel rebelled, you failed to demonstrate my holiness to them at the waters.' (These are the waters of Meribah at Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)
15
Then Moses said to the
Lord
,
16
O
Lord
, you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Please appoint a new man as leader for the community.
17
Give them someone who will guide them wherever they go and will lead them into battle, so the community of the
Lord
will not be like sheep without a shepherd.'
18
The
Lord
replied, 'Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.
19
Present him to Eleazar the priest before the whole community, and publicly commission him to lead the people.
20
Transfer some of your authority to him so the whole community of Israel will obey him.
21
When direction from the
Lord
is needed, Joshua will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will use the Urim — one of the sacred lots cast before the
Lord
— to determine his will. This is how Joshua and the rest of the community of Israel will determine everything they should do.'

Chapter 27
12
The
Lord
said to Moses, "Go up into this mountain of Abarim and see the land that I have given to the people of Israel.
13
When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was,
14
because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled, failing to uphold me as holy at the waters before their eyes." (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)
15
Moses spoke to the
Lord
, saying,
16
"Let the
Lord
, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation
17
who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the
Lord
may not be as sheep that have no shepherd."
18
So the
Lord
said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him.
19
Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall commission him in their sight.
20
You shall invest him with some of your authority, that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey.
21
And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the
Lord
. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel with him, the whole congregation."

18
So the
Lord
said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him.
19
Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence.
20
Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.
21
He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the
