Nehemiah 6:4-10
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 6
4
Then they sent
messages
to me four times worded in this way, and I answered them with the same wording.
5
Then Sanballat sent his servant to me in the same way a fifth time with an open letter in his hand.
6
In it was written: 'It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says, that you and the Jews intend to rebel; for that reason you are rebuilding the wall. And you are to be their king, according to these reports.
7
You have also appointed prophets to proclaim in Jerusalem concerning you, ‘A king is in Judah!’ And now it will be reported to the king according to these reports. So come now, let’s consult together.'
8
Then I sent
a message
to him saying, '
Nothing
like these things that you are saying has been done, but you are inventing them in your own mind.'
9
For all of them were
trying
to frighten us, thinking, 'They will become discouraged with the work and it will not be done.' But now,
God,
strengthen my hands.
10
When I entered the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was confined
at home,
he said, 'Let’s meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let’s close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you, and they are coming to kill you at night.'
King James Version
Chapter 6
4
Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
5
Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;
6
Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
7
And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
8
Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
9
For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
10
Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.

Chapter 6
4
Four times they sent me the same proposal, and I gave them the same reply.
5
Sanballat sent me this same message a fifth time by his aide, who had an open letter in his hand.
6
In it was written: It is reported among the nations—and Geshem agrees—that you and the Jews plan to rebel. This is the reason you are building the wall. According to these reports, you are to become their king
7
and have even set up the prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim on your behalf: "There is a king in Judah." These rumors will be heard by the king. So come, let’s confer together.
8
Then I replied to him, "There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are inventing them in your own mind."
9
For they were all trying to intimidate us, saying, "They will drop their hands from the work, and it will never be finished." But now, my God, strengthen my hands.
10
I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was restricted to his house. He said:
Let’s meet at the house of God,
inside the temple.
Let’s shut the temple doors
because they’re coming to kill you.
They’re coming to kill you tonight!
New Living Translation
Chapter 6
4
Four times they sent the same message, and each time I gave the same reply.
5
The fifth time, Sanballat’s servant came with an open letter in his hand,
6
and this is what it said:
'There is a rumor among the surrounding nations, and Geshem tells me it is true, that you and the Jews are planning to rebel and that is why you are building the wall. According to his reports, you plan to be their king.
7
He also reports that you have appointed prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim about you, ‘Look! There is a king in Judah!’ 'You can be very sure that this report will get back to the king, so I suggest that you come and talk it over with me.'
8
I replied, 'There is no truth in any part of your story. You are making up the whole thing.'
9
They were just trying to intimidate us, imagining that they could discourage us and stop the work. So I continued the work with even greater determination.
10
Later I went to visit Shemaiah son of Delaiah and grandson of Mehetabel, who was confined to his home. He said, 'Let us meet together inside the Temple of God and bolt the doors shut. Your enemies are coming to kill you tonight.'

Chapter 6
4
Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.
5
Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter
6
in which was written: "It is reported among the nations—and Geshem says it is true—that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king
7
and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together."
8
I sent him this reply: "Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head."
9
They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed." But I prayed, "Now strengthen my hands."
10
One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, "Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you—by night they are coming to kill you."
