Nehemiah 4:11-15
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 4
11
And our enemies said, 'They will not know or see until we come among them, kill them, and put a stop to the work.'
12
When the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times, 'They will come up against us from every place where you may turn,'
13
then I stationed
men
in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, the exposed places, and I stationed the people in families with their swords, spears, and bows.
14
When I saw
their fear,
I stood and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people: 'Do not be afraid of them; remember the Lord who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.'
15
Now when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and that God had frustrated their plan, then all of us returned to the wall, each one to his work.
King James Version
Chapter 4
11
And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.
12
And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.
13
Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
14
And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
15
And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 4
11
And our enemies said, "They won’t realize it until we’re among them and can kill them and stop the work."
12
When the Jews who lived nearby arrived, they said to us time and again, "Everywhere you turn, they attack us."
13
So I stationed people behind the lowest sections of the wall, at the vulnerable areas. I stationed them by families with their swords, spears, and bows.
14
After I made an inspection, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, "Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the great and awe-inspiring Lord, and fight for your countrymen, your sons and daughters, your wives and homes."
15
When our enemies heard that we knew their scheme and that God had frustrated it, every one of us returned to his own work on the wall.
New Living Translation
Chapter 4
11
Meanwhile, our enemies were saying, 'Before they know what’s happening, we will swoop down on them and kill them and end their work.'
12
The Jews who lived near the enemy came and told us again and again, 'They will come from all directions and attack us!'
13
So I placed armed guards behind the lowest parts of the wall in the exposed areas. I stationed the people to stand guard by families, armed with swords, spears, and bows.
14
Then as I looked over the situation, I called together the nobles and the rest of the people and said to them, 'Don’t be afraid of the enemy! Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes!'
15
When our enemies heard that we knew of their plans and that God had frustrated them, we all returned to our work on the wall.
English Standard Version
Chapter 4
11
And our enemies said, "They will not know or see till we come among them and kill them and stop the work."
12
At that time the Jews who lived near them came from all directions and said to us ten times, "You must return to us."
13
So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed the people by their clans, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
14
And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, "Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes."
15
When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to his work.
New International Version
Chapter 4
11
Also our enemies said, "Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work."
12
Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, "Wherever you turn, they will attack us."
13
Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows.
14
After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, "Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes."
15
When our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had frustrated it, we all returned to the wall, each to our own work.
New King James Version
Chapter 4
11
And our adversaries said, “They will neither know nor see anything, till we come into their midst and kill them and cause the work to cease.”
12
So it was, when the Jews who dwelt near them came, that they told us ten times, “From whatever place you turn,
they will be
upon us.”
13
Therefore I positioned
men
behind the lower parts of the wall, at the openings; and I set the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
14
And I looked, and arose and said to the nobles, to the leaders, and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”
15
And it happened, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and
that
God had brought their plot to nothing, that all of us returned to the wall, everyone to his work.
