Chapter 12

38He also said in his teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes and who want greetings in the marketplaces,
39the best seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets.
40They devour widows’ houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive harsher judgment."
New Living Translation
38Jesus also taught: 'Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they like to parade around in flowing robes and receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces.
39And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and the head table at banquets.
40Yet they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property and then pretend to be pious by making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be more severely punished.'

New International Version

40They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely."
