Lamentations 5:2-22

New American Standard Bible

Chapter 5

2Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, Our houses to foreigners. 3We have become orphans, without a father; Our mothers are like widows. 4 We have to pay for our drinking water, Our wood comes to us at a price. 5 Our pursuers are at our necks; We are worn out, we are given no rest. 6We have submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. 7Our fathers sinned, and are gone; It is we who have been burdened with the punishment for their wrongdoings. 8Slaves rule over us; There is no one to rescue us from their hand. 9We get our bread at the risk of our lives Because of the sword in the wilderness. 10Our skin has become as hot as an oven, Because of the ravages of hunger. 11They violated the women in Zion, The virgins in the cities of Judah. 12Leaders were hung by their hands; Elders were not respected. 13Young men worked at the grinding mill, And youths staggered under loads of wood. 14Elders are absent from the gate, Young men from their music. 15The joy of our hearts has ended; Our dancing has been turned into mourning. 16The crown has fallen from our head; Woe to us, for we have sinned! 17Because of this our heart is faint, Because of these things our eyes are dim; 18Because of Mount Zion which lies desolate, Jackals prowl in it. 19You, Lord, rule forever; Your throne is from generation to generation. 20Why will You forget us forever? Why do You abandon us for so long? 21Restore us to You, Lord, so that we may be restored; Renew our days as of old, 22Unless You have utterly rejected us And are exceedingly angry with us.

Chapter 5

2Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners. 3We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows. 4We must pay for the water we drink; the wood we get must be bought. 5Our pursuers are at our necks; we are weary; we are given no rest. 6We have given the hand to Egypt, and to Assyria, to get bread enough. 7Our fathers sinned, and are no more; and we bear their iniquities. 8Slaves rule over us; there is none to deliver us from their hand. 9We get our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the wilderness. 10Our skin is hot as an oven with the burning heat of famine. 11Women are raped in Zion, young women in the towns of Judah. 12Princes are hung up by their hands; no respect is shown to the elders. 13Young men are compelled to grind at the mill, and boys stagger under loads of wood. 14The old men have left the city gate, the young men their music. 15The joy of our hearts has ceased; our dancing has been turned to mourning. 16The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned! 17For this our heart has become sick, for these things our eyes have grown dim, 18for Mount Zion which lies desolate; jackals prowl over it. 19But you, O LORD, reign forever; your throne endures to all generations. 20Why do you forget us forever, why do you forsake us for so many days? 21Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may be restored! Renew our days as of old— 22unless you have utterly rejected us, and you remain exceedingly angry with us.

Chapter 5

2 Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens, And our houses to foreigners. 3We have become orphans and waifs, Our mothers are like widows. 4We pay for the water we drink, And our wood comes at a price. 5 They pursue at our heels; We labor and have no rest. 6 We have given our hand to the Egyptians And the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread. 7 Our fathers sinned and are no more, But we bear their iniquities. 8Servants rule over us; There is none to deliver us from their hand. 9We get our bread at the risk of our lives, Because of the sword in the wilderness. 10Our skin is hot as an oven, Because of the fever of famine. 11They ravished the women in Zion, The maidens in the cities of Judah. 12Princes were hung up by their hands, And elders were not respected. 13Young men ground at the millstones; Boys staggered under loads of wood. 14The elders have ceased gathering at the gate, And the young men from their music. 15The joy of our heart has ceased; Our dance has turned into mourning. 16 The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! 17Because of this our heart is faint; Because of these things our eyes grow dim; 18Because of Mount Zion which is desolate, With foxes walking about on it. 19You, O Lord, remain forever; Your throne from generation to generation. 20 Why do You forget us forever, And forsake us for so long a time? 21 Turn us back to You, O Lord, and we will be restored; Renew our days as of old, 22Unless You have utterly rejected us, And are very angry with us!
