Joshua 9:8-15
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 9
8
So they said to Joshua, 'We are your servants.' Then Joshua said to them, 'Who are you and where do you come from?'
9
They said to him, 'Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the
Lord
your God; for we have heard the report about Him and all that He did in Egypt,
10
and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan who was in Ashtaroth.
11
So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provisions in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, 'We are your servants; now then, make a covenant with us.'?’
12
This bread of ours
was
hot
when
we took it for our provisions from our houses on the day that we left to come to you; but now behold, it is dry and has become crumbled.
13
And these wineskins which we filled were new, and behold, they are split open; and these clothes of ours and our sandals are worn out from the very long journey.'
14
So the men
of Israel
took some of their provisions, and did not ask for the counsel of the
Lord
.
15
And Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the congregation swore
an oath
to them.
King James Version
Chapter 9
8
And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?
9
And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the
Lord
thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
10
And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.
11
Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.
12
This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:
13
And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.
14
And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the
Lord
.
15
And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

Chapter 9
8
They said to Joshua, "We are your servants." Then Joshua asked them, "Who are you and where do you come from?"
9
They replied to him, "Your servants have come from a faraway land because of the reputation of the
Lord
your God. For we have heard of his fame, and all that he did in Egypt,
10
and all that he did to the two Amorite kings beyond the Jordan—King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan, who was in Ashtaroth.
11
So our elders and all the inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions with you for the journey; go and meet them and say, "We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us."’
12
This bread of ours was warm when we took it from our houses as food on the day we left to come to you; but see, it is now dry and crumbly.
13
These wineskins were new when we filled them; but see, they are cracked. And these clothes and sandals of ours are worn out from the extremely long journey."
14
Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions, but did not seek the
Lord
’s decision.
15
So Joshua established peace with them and made a treaty to let them live, and the leaders of the community swore an oath to them.
New Living Translation
Chapter 9
8
They replied, 'We are your servants.' 'But who are you?' Joshua demanded. 'Where do you come from?'
9
They answered, 'Your servants have come from a very distant country. We have heard of the might of the
Lord
your God and of all he did in Egypt.
10
We have also heard what he did to the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan River — King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan (who lived in Ashtaroth).
11
So our elders and all our people instructed us, ‘Take supplies for a long journey. Go meet with the people of Israel and tell them, 'We are your servants; please make a treaty with us.'’
12
This bread was hot from the ovens when we left our homes. But now, as you can see, it is dry and moldy.
13
These wineskins were new when we filled them, but now they are old and split open. And our clothing and sandals are worn out from our very long journey.'
14
So the Israelites examined their food, but they did not consult the
Lord
.
15
Then Joshua made a peace treaty with them and guaranteed their safety, and the leaders of the community ratified their agreement with a binding oath.
