Joshua 4:2-8
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 4
2
Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe,
3
and command them, saying, ‘Take up for yourselves twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet are standing firmly, and carry them over with you and lay them down in the encampment where you will spend the night.’?'
4
So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe;
5
and Joshua said to them, 'Cross again to the ark of the
Lord
your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel.
6
This shall be a sign among you; when your children ask later, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’
7
then you shall say to them, ‘That the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the
Lord
; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.’ So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever.'
8
So the sons of Israel did exactly as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, just as the
Lord
spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel; and they carried them over with them to the encampment and put them down there.
King James Version
Chapter 4
2
Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,
3
And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests' feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night.
4
Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:
5
And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the
Lord
your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:
6
That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?
7
Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the
Lord
; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.
8
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the
Lord
spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 4
2
"Choose twelve men from the people, one man for each tribe,
3
and command them: Take twelve stones from this place in the middle of the Jordan where the priests are standing, carry them with you, and set them down at the place where you spend the night."
4
So Joshua summoned the twelve men he had selected from the Israelites, one man for each tribe,
5
and said to them, "Go across to the ark of the
Lord
your God in the middle of the Jordan. Each of you lift a stone onto his shoulder, one for each of the Israelite tribes,
6
so that this will be a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’
7
you should tell them, ‘The water of the Jordan was cut off in front of the ark of the
Lord
’s covenant. When it crossed the Jordan, the Jordan’s water was cut off.’ Therefore these stones will always be a memorial for the Israelites."
8
The Israelites did just as Joshua had commanded them. The twelve men took stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each of the Israelite tribes, just as the
Lord
had told Joshua. They carried them to the camp and set them down there.
New Living Translation
Chapter 4
2
Now choose twelve men, one from each tribe.
3
Tell them, ‘Take twelve stones from the very place where the priests are standing in the middle of the Jordan. Carry them out and pile them up at the place where you will camp tonight.’'
4
So Joshua called together the twelve men he had chosen — one from each of the tribes of Israel.
5
He told them, 'Go into the middle of the Jordan, in front of the Ark of the
Lord
your God. Each of you must pick up one stone and carry it out on your shoulder — twelve stones in all, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel.
6
We will use these stones to build a memorial. In the future your children will ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’
7
Then you can tell them, ‘They remind us that the Jordan River stopped flowing when the Ark of the
Lord
’s Covenant went across.’ These stones will stand as a memorial among the people of Israel forever.'
8
So the men did as Joshua had commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan River, one for each tribe, just as the
Lord
had told Joshua. They carried them to the place where they camped for the night and constructed the memorial there.

Chapter 4
2
"Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe,
3
and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight."
4
So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe,
5
and said to them, "Go over before the ark of the
Lord
your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites,
6
to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’
7
tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the
Lord
. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever."
8
So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the
